The British Columbia Conservation Foundation (BCCF) is searching for a Turtle Nest Monitor to support the Western Painted Turtle Recovery Project.


British Columbia's only remaining native freshwater turtle species, the Pacific Coast population of Western Painted Turtles (_Chrysemys picta bellii_), is federally threatened and provincially red-listed.

Understanding where western painted turtles are nesting, and protecting nesting sites, is critical for their conservation.

LOCATION OF JOB:
Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley

TERM:
Start date as early as May 15th, with an approximate end date of July 8th, 2023

SALARY:
$20/hour (plus 4% vacation pay paid out hourly)

HOURS OF WORK PER WEEK: 30

Note:

This position requires working in the evenings in all weather conditions, working alone outdoors, and daily travel throughout the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley region.


Duties may include:

  • Field surveys to assess the distribution and population status of Western Painted Turtles and sensitive habitats in and around Regional Parks in Langley, Burnaby, Coquitlam and other sites throughout the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley
  • Nest protection: installing nest protection cages on identified turtle nests
  • Habitat enhancement, ecological restoration, and threat mitigation measures to aid recovery of Western Painted Turtles, including nesting beach maintenance, wetland restoration, shoreline naturalization, and installation of wildlife homes
  • Environmental education and community outreach activities, including events, workshops, and programs for children

Essential qualifications:

  • Applicants must qualify for the Canada Summer Jobs Wage Subsidy criteria years old, Canadian Citizen/permanent resident/refugee, have a valid SIN and be eligible to work in Canada)
  • Be willing to work evening shifts outside in all weather conditions
  • Have a valid driver's licence and daily access to a vehicle
  • Be selfdirected with an ability to work with mínimal supervision
  • Have experience working outdoors and navigating through complex terrain
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Be comfortable handling turtles or have a keen desire to learn

Asset qualifications:

  • Postsecondary education in a natural science discipline
  • Previous biological work experience in the conservation of threatened and/or endangered species
  • Understanding of animal behaviour and the reproductive biology of turtles
  • Experience working with reptiles and/or other animals
  • Animal care or husbandry experience, preferably with reptiles
  • Experience with either concepts or practice of habitat restoration projects
  • A valid occupational first aid certification
