About the role
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Associate Director to join our dynamic Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation team in our Medical Affairs and Innovations division.

The Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation (OTDT) team within Canadian Blood Services collaborates with partners and stakeholders (internal and external) to develop and strengthen the foundational elements that contribute to a high-performing organ and tissue donation and transplantation system. It also develops and operates a number of registries through which Canadian Blood Services' supports the sharing of solid organs-for-transplant within and across provincial boundaries. Canadian Blood Service's OTDT Program also acts as the Secretariat for the System Operators Advisory Committee, a critical committee in a new governance structure that will oversee pan-Canadian collaboration in key national initiatives.

In this role, you will provide operational and administrative leadership to a diverse team of professionals and subject matter experts who work collaboratively to engage and coordinate the activities of administrators, health care professionals, researchers, and patients who are working together to equitably advance organ and tissue donation and transplantation health care services in all parts of Canada. You will be a member of the OTDT program's senior leadership team and will work closely with other program leaders to role model Canadian Blood Services' leadership commitments.

You are specifically responsible for the administrative, operational, fiscal and human resource oversight for all of Canadian Blood Services' interprovincial organ sharing registries and will work to improve and optimize efficiencies across all program and service areas, including the Kidney Paired Donation (KPD) registry, Highly Sensitized Patient (HSP) registry, the Hearts Registry for High-Status and Highly-Sensitized Patients (HRHSP), the National Organ Waitlist (NOW), and all future registries. You will fulfil these functions by working in close collaboration with the OTDT program's other Associate Directors, its medical advisors, regional donation and transplant programs, HLA laboratories, advisory and operational committees, external partners and stakeholders, and administrative and clinical thought leaders.

  • Harnessing your ability to lead and work collaboratively across a diverse team, you will be a people-first leader and administrator with the breadth of skills, experience, and knowledge necessary to lead, guide and support a team of direct and indirect reports, who have a wide range of skills, expertise, knowledge, and experience.
  • Drawing on your knowledge and expertise, you will oversee, guide and influence the development and implementation of strategies, policies, plans and activities for interprovincial organ sharing.
  • Utilizing your highly strategic and forward-thinking approach, you will continually foster the high degree of cooperation and teamwork that is required, both internally and externally, to establish, maintain, evaluate, and evolve interprovincial organ sharing registries and other related activities and services based on the best available evidence and emerging science and technologies.
  • Concentrating on your excellent communication skills and continuous growth mindset, in collaboration with stakeholders, you will always strive to improve decision making with respect to how organs are shared across provincial boundaries, to improve access and quality for all Canadians, and to contribute to exemplary patient outcomes.
  • Focusing on your ability to build relationships with key subject matter experts and influencers, working in partnership with the Director, OTDT, the Director, Information Technology, and the technical team who support the Canadian Transplant Registry (CTR), you will also guide the ongoing operation and evolution of the CTR and related products and services to ensure it remains resilient, relevant, responsive and capable of supporting the registries as interprovincial organ sharing services evolve.

Desired education and skills

  • Minimum of a master's degree from an accredited university in Health Services Administration, Nursing, Business Administration, or related area of graduate study is required.
  • Health profession current or recent designation (e.g. RN, Pharm, MD) is preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of publicly funded health system design, development, and delivery in Canada.
  • Project management, portfolio management and change management expertise.
  • Ten years of progressive experience at the leadership level in a health care environment. Direct experience in organ and tissue donation and transplantation health care services is a strong preference.
  • Demonstration of ongoing professional development and some knowledge of current and latest trends and best practices in OTDT.
  • Proven capabilities in leading large-scale initiatives and change management.
  • Proven stakeholder relationship management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and working with health professionals and high performing teams.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including teamwork, facilitation, influencing and negotiation; able to achieve consensus to drive results.
  • Demonstrated experience in coaching and developing staff.
  • Must possess strong written and verbal communications skills, including presentation delivery.
