Construction estimators play a crucial role in the construction industry by providing accurate cost estimates for construction projects. They analyze project specifications, blueprints, and other relevant documents to determine the materials, labor, and equipment required for a project. Construction estimators work closely with project managers, architects, engineers, and subcontractors to ensure that cost estimates align with project requirements and budget constraints.

Responsibilities:

  1. Review project plans, specifications, and other relevant documents to understand project requirements and scope.
  2. Analyze blueprints, drawings, and technical documents to identify the quantity and type of materials, labor, and equipment needed for construction projects.
  3. Collaborate with project managers, architects, engineers, and subcontractors to gather necessary information and clarify project details.
  4. Conduct site visits to assess project conditions, identify potential challenges, and gather accurate data for estimating purposes.
  5. Utilize estimating software and tools to prepare detailed cost estimates, including material take-offs, labor costs, equipment expenses, and subcontractor bids.
  6. Research and source materials, equipment, and subcontractor services to obtain accurate pricing information.
  7. Assist with developing a cost catalogue, cash flow projections, and resource mapping.
  8. Prepare and present cost estimates to clients, project stakeholders, and management, ensuring clear communication of the estimated costs and project scope.
  9. Collaborate with procurement teams to obtain competitive pricing for materials and equipment.
  10. Evaluate and compare subcontractor bids, negotiate pricing, and select the most suitable subcontractors for the project.
  11. Continuously update and maintain a database of cost information, including material prices, labor rates, and equipment costs, to ensure accurate and up-to-date estimates.
  12. Monitor and track project costs throughout the construction process, identifying any deviations from the estimated budget and providing recommendations for cost-saving measures.
  13. Collaborate with project teams to provide value engineering suggestions and alternative cost-effective solutions.
  14. Stay updated with industry trends, construction methods, and regulations to ensure accurate and competitive cost estimates.

Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  2. 5+ years experience as a construction estimator or in a similar role within the construction industry.
  3. Strong knowledge of construction materials, methods, and processes.
  4. Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and technical documents.

  8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with project teams, clients, and subcontractors.
  9. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced construction environment.
  10. Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  11. Knowledge of local building codes, regulations, and industry standards.
  12. Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and priorities.
  13. Professional certification, such as Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or Certified Construction Estimator (CCE), is a plus.
