In Westlock, the Diverse-abilities program assists persons with mental health concerns, and/or developmental disabilities to live in and actively participate in their community.

WJS Canada staff work to improve quality of life by building communication and life skills, as well as, encouraging independence, self expression and creativity.


In Your Role You Will

Typical overnight shift may include:

  • Awake hrs (~6:30pm 11pm)
  • Assist individuals, according to functioning abilities, with hygiene, personal care and daily living & other nightly bedtime routine (personal hygiene, brushing teeth, etc.) ensuring a consistent, healthy and safe environment for persons in care.
  • Overnight (sleep hrs; ~11pm7am)
  • You will be provided a couch or bed within the residence and sleep hours are paid at minimum wage $16.50/hr. In the event of an emergent situation, sleep staff will be responsible for awake responsibilities to provide immediate support in crisis situations.
  • Awake hrs (~7am8am) day shift arrives, shift exchange

The Position
During overnight hours, the front-line sleep shift staff, sleeps at the person-served's home and ensures a consistent, healthy/safe environment.

In the event of an emergent situation, sleep staff are available to provide immediate support in crisis situations and will be responsible for awake responsibilities.

4 shift on/ 4 shift off rotation (working 6:30pm to 8am)

Awake hours are paid at regular rate. Sleep hours (11pm-7am) are paid at $16.50/hr

This is a gender-specific position based upon the behavior and needs of the persons served.

Criminal Record Check/Ministry Check Statement

Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a current (dated within 6 months of hiring date) Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check. These checks can take up to 6 weeks to obtain, please ensure you prepare accordingly.

  • Two (2) years experience working with persons with a developmental disability or mental health diagnoses.
  • Understanding of Dementia an asset


MUST HAVE
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License; reliable vehicle, clean driver's abstract and adequate insurance
  • Skills in coaching/assisting individuals in life skills, anger management, daily chores, self help & problem solving, etc.
  • Committed to philosophies and principles of community based living for individuals in service.
  • Good computer skills as all files are electronic

ALSO helpful, but will train if needed:

  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention, Medication Administration, Abuse Protocol, Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies, Foundations and Disabilities Training
  • Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety, as appropriate.
