A high-profile leadership role for an experienced facilitator with outstanding collaborative skills


The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sports has the primary responsibility for the tourism sector, which is comprised of a vast and interwoven network of tourism businesses, industry organizations and government agencies - all working together to grow and sustain a dynamic industry that will attract visitors, stimulate economic activity, and create jobs.

The Heritage Branch, operating within the Tourism Sector Strategy Division, encourages and facilitates the recognition and safeguarding of BC's cultural heritage places through the development and implementation of policy and programs for geographical names, historic place recognition and protection, fossil management and the stewardship of physical heritage resources.


The Manager, Heritage Programs and Services facilitates the achievement of provincial heritage, historic, and cultural resource management goals and objectives through the development and implementation of related legislation, policies, strategies and plans.

The position works collaboratively with the Manager of Stewardship and Historic Place Operations whose role is focused on heritage property management and the maintenance and development of registers of historic places and collections to influence natural resource decisions.

The position works in partnership, or collaborates with other levels of government, a variety of stakeholders including First Nations, and non-profit organizations (e.g., Heritage Society of BC, BC Heritage Fairs Society, BC Museums Association, etc.).

The Manager leads a work unit, directly supervises staff, and leads project teams.

An engaged member of the Heritage Branch management team, the Manager contributes to developing long-term corporate objectives, establishing priorities, allocating resources, acting as a change agent and resolving issues affecting the program, the branch and the heritage goals.


Job Requirements:

Education:

  • University Degree in Heritage Conservation, Cultural Resource Management, Anthropology, Architectural History, Museum Studies or other related field and related experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered (e.g., a diploma with additional years of related experience).

Experience:

  • Experience at a management or senior administrative level in the field of heritage conservation, heritage resource management, historical archives management or other directly related area in either the public sector (e.g., federal or provincial government) or private sector (e.g., heritage trust organization, major museum, cultural archives).
  • Specialized experience in one or more of the key focus areas of this position (e.g., heritage policy, geographic place names, heritage of language, cultural or historic site planning, curatorial collections, fossil management, Indigenous culture, etc.)
  • Program management experience including defining corporate needs, articulating program objectives, developing and implementing strategic and operational plans, and assessing program success against performance indicators.
  • Experience leading a work unit including developing unit and staff performance goals and supervising staff.
  • Experience establishing, building, and maintaining collaborative working relationships with executive, senior managers, colleagues and external stakeholders, for the purposes of advising on heritage program and policy issues and recommending solutions for complex challenges and issues.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid BC Driver's License.
  • Travel is required for this position.
