Discovery Commons (DC) provides information technology support for the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

Our mission is to partner and collaborate with clients, University, and third parties to determine value based, sustainable technology solutions that enable the Faculty to achieve its academic mission.


The AV and Distance Learning Team Lead will be the key point person for client communications for the AV and Distance Learning Support Team.

They will provide AV workflow coordination and will be responsible for coordinating the day-to-day AV operations related to the Faculty of Medicine's including the Mississauga Academy of Medicine (MAM) and Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH).

Workflow coordination includes monitoring of the progress of AV Specialists and Educational AV Coordinators on specific tasks, providing assistance and advice where appropriate, and giving prompt notification of the Associate Director, Technical Operations regarding significant issues or concerns.

The AV and Distance Learning Team Lead ensures appropriate AV staffing levels and coverage for the MAM and all other AV projects, as well as coordination with other IT specialists in other technical teams (such as the Infrastructure, Applications, and Technical Support teams), and provides the next level of escalation for AV problems that can't be solved by an AV Specialist.


The AV and Distance Learning Team Lead also provides direct support and advice to students, faculty, and staff at the Faculty of Medicine in the use of audio-visual technologies and services.

This includes videoconferencing, digital media production, recording and streaming, presentation, and other video-mediated communications services of the Discovery Commons, including the meeting room and computer lab facilities.

The AV and Distance Learning Team Lead liaises with external technical support staff at remote sites and service providers to ensure the technical quality of events, and participates in the practical training of end-users to support efficient and effective use of video conferencing and presentation systems.

The AV and Distance Learning Team Lead also performs audio and video recording, editing, and distribution of digital media by a variety of means, to a wide variety of audiences.

Finally, the AV and Distance Learning Team Lead and the AV and Distance Learning Team are responsible for monitoring emerging technologies on hybrid work as it relates to AV equipment, hardware and software and providing recommendations to ensure the success of all staff and faculty in Temerty Medicine.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and implementing workflow for the unit
  • Analyzing, troubleshooting and testing highly complex systems
  • Tracking service metrics to inform continuous service improvements
  • Resolving problems that have been referred by other specialists
  • Performing preventive maintenance on audiovisual equipment
  • Evaluating new technologies to determine if they support objectives
  • Keeping wellinformed on current technologies, best practices and industry standards
  • Providing detailed information and demonstrating the use of technology

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or an acceptable combination of education and experience
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in an AV or technical support environment, ideally in a higher education environment
  • Experience with both PCbased and dedicated videoconferencing, audiovisual, collaboration, and presentation technologies
  • Technical certifications (like those from Polycom, Tandberg, or Crestron)
  • Demonstrated experience leading and directing teams and coordinating workflow of unionized staff members
  • Experience with planning for new A/V infrastructure and systems and support the integration of emerging technologies
  • Experience in frontline helpdesk or technical support work
  • Experience with the following technologies is required: Industrystandard AV technologies, including videoconferencing and web streaming products, and video capture and production technologies; a wide variety of media formats (like MPEG, QuickTime, Flash, and Windows Media); digital media recording and editing tools (like Premiere, Avid, and ProTools); and Windows and Mac operating systems
