SALARY: Based on year of call - $70 (Yr1) to $135 (Yr% Staff Lawyer Benefit Plan - As per the PEA Salary Schedule)

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Reporting to the Managing Lawyer or Excluded Manager, providing legal counsel and representation in family law practice, including separation, divorce, guardianship/access, property division, and child protection matters. Collaborating with community advocates to develop legal services, programs, and law reform.

DUTIES:

  • Provides family/child protection law services, legal research, and document preparation.
  • Develops solutions to family issues and represents clients in family matters at all levels of BC Courts.
  • Negotiates case matters and provides supervision and work direction.
  • Attends Court User Meetings, delivers public legal education, and collaborates with community advocates.
  • Builds relationships and partnerships within the Indigenous community.
  • Assists in workshops and provides advice on various legal issues.
  • Develops partnerships with justice system participants and meets reporting requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Basic requirements

  • Degree from a Law School of recognized standing and membership in the Law Society of British Columbia.
  • Experience in family and child protection law with supervisory experience.
  • Experience at Provincial and Supreme Court levels.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

This position requires some travel:

  • A valid BC driver's license is required.
  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout BC.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of family and child protection law and LABC Policy and Procedures.
  • Experience in Public Legal Education (PLE) and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to assert rights, make effective courtroom presentations, and handle heavy workload demands.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, proficiency in computer skills, and understanding of new technologies.
  • Awareness of government laws and policies impacting Indigenous peoples and ability to establish rapport with Indigenous communities.
  • Understanding of Indigenous justice concepts, cultural diversity issues, and challenges facing Indigenous communities.
