NATURE AND SCOPE:

  • The individual will coordinate and support the District wireless point-to-point grid throughout the wide area network (WAN) and site-based local area networks (LAN). Furthermore, they will assist the Video Conferencing Technician with video conferencing and audio/visual initiatives.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • In collaboration with the Network Manager, plans, organizes, and participates in the research, testing, and evaluation of wireless network hardware and software.
  • Monitors and maintains all wireless WAN and LAN hardware within the District. Ensures the security and maintenance of systems on LAN and WAN WiFi networks.
  • Keeps documentation on wireless LAN/WAN systems updated.
  • Offers technical support and guidance on WiFi systems and services for all district staff.
  • Assists in administering and maintaining District video conferencing and audio-visual equipment.
  • Conducts training for staff on video conferencing systems and services.
  • Audits and monitors video conferencing systems and provides necessary assistance.
  • Performs other relevant duties as assigned.

ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:

  • Ability to effectively communicate and maintain relationships with Management, Administrative Officers, Information Technology staff, other employees of the District, and external agencies.
  • Thorough understanding of wireless networking protocols in LAN and WAN setups, involving unlicensed spectrum frequencies and their regulatory stipulations.
  • Basic comprehension of networking protocols (TCP/IP, ICMP, ARP).
  • Familiarity with audio-visual and streaming technologies (Zoom, YouTube, Teams).
  • Experience in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of Linux/UNIX servers is beneficial.
  • Capacity to work independently, ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Strong planning, prioritization, project management, and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Proficient in organization, written and verbal communication, and presentation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2 Year Post-Secondary Diploma in Telecommunications or Computer Technology.
  • Minimum of 4 years supporting point-to-point wireless WAN and enterprise wireless LAN technologies.
  • Holding a minimum Linux Certification LPI Level II or at least three years of experience with Unix-based systems (specifically Linux) in Wide Area Networks.
  • Valid B.C. Driver's License.
