About New Westminster Schools


New Westminster is located in the center of Metro Vancouver between the larger communities of Burnaby, Coquitlam, Surrey, and Richmond.

Despite its location, the city is relatively small and has retained a strong sense of history and community. The total population is approximately 70,000 and is expected to grow to 84,000 by 2021.

District schools are, in general, fully subscribed, and a modest increase in student enrollment is expected over the next few years.


The student population is reflective of the city's population, with a full range of social and cultural backgrounds forming a diverse presence in our schools.


Our learners:

Approximately 6,385 students in the K-12 system, made up of:311 Aboriginal students;
1,051 English Language Learner (ELL) students;
993 French Immersion students; and,

538 students with identified Special Needs.

12 schools; 8 elementary, 3 middle and 1 secondary

Overview and Focus:

The Indigenous Curriculum Coordinator is a non-enrolling district teacher who reports directly to the District Vice Principal of Indigenous

Education. They will play a lead role in supporting staff in Decolonizing and

Indigenizing the curriculum from a Reconciliation, Equity, Diversity, and

Inclusion lens. They will also play a lead role in schools in planning,

developing, and monitoring programs that support success for Indigenous

learners and the goals identified in the Aboriginal Education Enhancement

Agreement. Finally, the Indigenous Curriculum Coordinator will be responsible

for supporting students around successful grade-to-grade transitions and

meeting graduation requirements.

Job Function:

Support educators in curriculum development and implementation through Indigenization and Decolonization.

Model effective instructional approaches and collaborate with colleagues to support Indigenous students in their learning.

Monitor and track Indigenous student success in relation to the goals of the Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement.

Work closely with Indigenous learners, parents, families, community members and school staff to support the transition of middle school and secondary students through the development of effective transition plans


Collaborate with School-Based teams and other enrolling, non-enrolling, and support staff to analyze student needs and develop individual student learning plans.

Work in consultation with enrolling classroom teachers on assessment, evaluation, and programming strategies.

Provide targeted instructional support to secondary Indigenous students by working within the classroom, and in small group settings.

Promote and model the integration of Indigenous cultural and traditional knowledge into classroom curriculum and school setting.

Share knowledge of Indigenous curriculum resources and provide professional development opportunities to colleagues.

Provide consultation to school teams in developing effective interventions for students with elevated risk and behavioral needs.

Work to reduce and remove barriers and foster understanding of Indigenous worldviews and perspectives while mediating between systems (e.g., family, school, community)

Working with youth, families, and the school district staff as appropriate to assist students to meet their graduation requirements.

Support and facilitate the Equity Scan process and subsequent action plan.

Required Qualifications:

Valid BC Teachers Certificate

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others

Demonstrated understanding of cultural traditions, history and contemporary issues experienced by various Indigenous peoples in Canada

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Indigenous students, parents, and community resources as part of an integral school-based team

Preference will be given to persons with Indigenous ancestry
