JOB PURPOSE

To ensure the timely and effective provision of psychiatric inpatient care unit, ER Mental Health, and Mobile Crisis teams, and to provide clinical leadership of a multi-disciplinary treatment team of mental health professionals in line with the mission, vision, values, and policies of Horizon Health Network.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Nursing with a minimum of 3 years clinical experience in mental health.
  • Preference given to applicants with management experience and direct experience in inpatient mental health services delivery.
  • A Masters of Nursing is not required but would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated administrative skills such as leadership, managing resources, superior communication skills sound judgment and decision making.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning, education, and development.
  • Ability to organize and direct a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member, and independently with minimal supervision.
  • High regard for confidentiality and advocacy for patients/clients.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with a variety of health care providers, including nurses, physicians, managers, and staff from other disciplines

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages nursing staff and multidisciplinary team of the psychiatry inpatient unit, the ER Mental health team, and Mobile Crisis team, including; involvement with patient flow, issue resolution, performance management, providing guidance, and oversight relating to clinical care.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works with the Director and Medical Director to provide: Clinical leadership, consultation, and expertise to inpatient staff and the multi-disciplinary team and ensures safe clinical practices and exemplary services are provided to patients/clients following established standards of care and unit/service goals. Provides leadership in planning, implementation, and evaluation of inpatient treatment and interventions and is accountable for the clinical practice of nursing units. Leads quality processes and best practices to improve clinical operations of the unit. Utilizes guidelines, standards, and research to support a care delivery system that produces quality patient/client care with optimal patient outcomes. Directs and monitors the delivery of services to patients/clients and interfaces with components of the mental health system consistently. Ensures standards and practice are maintained and provides leadership in continuous quality improvement initiatives. Reviews treatment plans and staff assignments when appropriate and ensures the appropriate distribution of workloads among nursing staff. Develops and implements processes by which program outcomes are identified and evaluated. Ensures that team members meet regularly to discuss treatment plans and address program issues. Ensures interagency and inter-sectorial collaboration for formal and informal components of the environment. Responds to clinical concerns or complaints from clients. Represents inpatient mental health services, including Nursing Policies and Procedures Committee, Nurse Managers Group, as well as external forums when appropriate. Encourages staff in personal and professional development by providing opportunities through role enhancement, coaching, and education. Creates an empowering environment to enhance professional growth, collaboration, and innovation among team members and with other programs. Develops a respectful team milieu that includes clear lines of communication, defined responsibilities, and accountability. Leads the recruitment, selection, hiring, and orientation of new staff in consultation with Human resources and appropriate disciplines. Responsible for scheduling nursing staff and duties related to payroll, monitoring of attendance and vacation, flex, etc. Responsible for regular staff performance reviews. Approves and/or recommends staff leaves. Advocates for additional human resources when appropriate. Monitors expenses and implements cost control measures related to areas of responsibility. Ensures the accurate collection of utilization data for inpatient services through monitoring and coaching. Contributes to the development, review, and implementation of policies and processes. Ensures the communication of information between inpatient acute services and other teams within Addiction and Mental Health Services. Acts as a linkage with community agencies related to inpatient services when appropriate Other related duties as required.
