Program Manager Joëlle Marion recently had a conversation with Sylvie Fortin, the inaugural volunteer in Québec City for the Student Literacy Program.

Sylvie embarked on her journey by pursuing a Bachelor of Education in Preschool and Elementary Education at Laval University back in 1994.

During her second year of studies, she came across a poster from what was known as Frontier College/Collège Frontière in Toronto, which sparked her interest to get involved by reaching out via the provided phone number on the poster.

Subsequently, Sylvie was supplied with a canvas bag containing essential promotional materials like posters and pamphlets, marking the beginning of her adventure.

Utilizing these materials, Sylvie recruited around four to five individuals, primarily from an educational background.

The initial team commenced their recruitment efforts at the Reading Tents on St-Joseph Street, an area frequented by individuals facing financial hardships or homelessness.

Recognizing the urgent need, the volunteers swiftly sprung into action to provide books and information to these individuals, many of whom had uncertain daily living situations.

Additionally, this dedicated group organized Reading Tents at the Summer Festival and within libraries, gathering donated books for redistribution without charge, ultimately leading to the conversion of many beneficiaries into volunteers.

The team's first significant collaboration materialized with the Centre Louis-Jolliet adult education center, which directed learners with more consistent schedules to further their educational journey.

Despite encountering challenges such as lack of motivation, frequent absences, and dropouts among learners, the team persevered, emphasizing the importance of recruiting individuals who resonated with the organization's mission and remained committed.

Over time, the team diversified its membership, encompassing individuals from varied backgrounds, enriching the collaboration between learners and tutors.

Credibility and Longevity A standout moment for Sylvie was championing the group's effort to secure recognition as an extracurricular student association, granting them dedicated space at Laval University.

This milestone provided the team with a hub for meetings, storage, and training new volunteers, thereby enhancing the organization's credibility, enabling strategic planning, and activity expansion.

Post-graduation, Sylvie's transition led to a temporary disconnect from the team, although she departed with a sense of pride for her contributions during her academic tenure.

Despite her absence, the group's operations persisted, a testament to her foundational efforts while studying.

Thanks to Sylvie's foresight, Frontier College's initiatives in Laval University and Quebec City remain active to this day.

It's a Small World A fortuitous encounter unfolded as Sylvie crossed paths with Mylène Moisan, a columnist at the Quebec newspaper Le Soleil and a concerned parent of one of Sylvie's previous students.

Discovering their shared history as Frontier College volunteers during a similar period prompted a delightful connection between the two individuals.

In a striking coincidence, another Mylène—Mylène Bussières, the Community Coordinator at United for Literacy in Quebec City—found her child enrolled in Sylvie's class.

During informational sessions on community organizations, Mylène seized the opportunity to engage with the class and shed light on her role within the organization.

Before concluding the interaction, Sylvie highlighted the profound impact of effecting positive changes within our communities, emphasizing that the seeds sown today could bear fruit in the future and continue to flourish over time.
