Opportunity

MacEwan University is seeking applicants for Security Services Agents for two full-time continuing opportunities with the Security Services department.


You will exercise authority being licensed under the Security Services and Investigators Act of Alberta and deliver services outlined in the university Security Services policy (D5040).

You will be responsible for working within applicable legislation, university policy and procedure, the Criminal Code, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and all other provincial/federal legislation.

Included in the Security Services duties is to diminish any risk to the safe learning environment on campus and to protect MacEwan's assets.

The position is further required to engage in community response and community problem-solving initiatives.

These positions are for internal applicants only.

Additional responsibilities will include:

  • Respond to alarms, issues with plant systems, emergency telephones, and use CCTV (camera) systems.
  • Providing information to staff, students, contractors, patrons, and visitors on request or proactively when noticing a person in need.
  • Ensuring all material handed over to external police agencies complies with university FOIP procedures and a completed law enforcement disclosure form is signed by the police and is on file/scanned in the report.
  • At the beginning and end of each shift, provide a verbal passon report with the oncoming shift members to ensure effective communication is provided to alert shift activity or incidents that may require further attention/work or to make the oncoming shift members aware of activity or risks that may be expected.
  • Responding to calls for medical assistance by providing first aid and maintaining the safety of the person for the arrival of EMS.
  • Assisting in training/educating staff and students on prevention initiatives and safety programs promoted by the university.

SKILLS

You will have:

  • Working knowledge of Security practices and legislation covering authorities granted to the Security Agents.
  • The ability to follow instructions and to read and interpret policy/legislation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to be able to maintain cooperative and professional relationships within the Security Services team.
  • The ability to use logic and reasoning when providing services to clients.
  • The ability to quickly evaluate, prioritize, and deliver effective service.
  • Strong report writing and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to quickly react to make critical decisions in threatening or emergency situations and to be able to multitask under pressure.
  • The ability to use FM radio communication effectively using 10code and phonetic alphabet.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A graduate of a police/peace officer program
  • A minimum of two years of experience as a licensed security services worker or peace officer/police officer
  • Must possess a Security Services Worker License issued by the Government of Alberta under the Security Services & Investigators Act
  • A successful completion of physical training standards (e.g. PARE test)
  • Prior experience in a postsecondary facility is an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
