Indigenous Community Cultural Liaison

Fraser River Indigenous Society upholds cultural programs and traditions. The Indigenous Cultural Advisor collaborates with families, children, and participants, as well as FRIS staff, to offer cultural guidance and support. The role involves fostering connections with Indigenous culture through community involvement, cultural teachings, and ties to home communities. Responsibilities include participation in various meetings for mediation, emotional support, and ensuring cultural needs are met.
The position entails developing and leading programs to bolster cultural connections and understanding among individuals, families, and staff.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Provide supportive resources at home and in the office, collaborating with FRIS staff
- Assist FRIS team members with culturally appropriate information and services, guiding wellness practices
- Attend Foundation and family meetings when requested
- Enhance a culturally suitable environment for those receiving services from FRIS
- Facilitate programs, including after-hours work
- Work on ancestral heritage programming with families
- Handle budget, claims, and petty cash reconciliation
- Follow cultural protocols and teachings with guidance from community members and elders
- Complete required reporting, track service hours, and occasional case notes
- Participate in agency events and community activities
- Degree in Human/Social Services or related field
- 3 years of experience in Indigenous family, child, or youth services or mental health services, or equivalent
- Experience with Indigenous communities and understanding of cultural diversity
- Sensitivity to the impact of colonization on Indigenous peoples
- Experience with intervention approaches and cultural understanding
- Ability to develop unique cultural plans for individuals and communities
- Collaboration with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous communities
- Self-directed and able to conduct research with minimal supervision
- Effective under pressure and in crisis situations
- Familiarity with local community resources
- Organizational skills and task planning
- Ability to communicate effectively in written form and utilize technology
- Valid First Aid and Infant CPR certification within 90 days of employment
- Valid BC driver's license and reliable transportation
- Flexibility to work evenings or weekends
- Clean record check for working with children and vulnerable individuals
- Non-profit experience is a plus
