Position Overview

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Mental Health Clinician to join our Inn from the Cold team. As an Integrated Support Services team member, the Mental Health Clinician works with individuals and families in our homeless shelter to promote optimum mental/emotional health and wellness. They work from a trauma-informed and client-centred approach, following the vision and values of the organization to provide clinical support and system navigation to families who have experienced and been impacted by homelessness, poverty, mental health, addiction and histories of trauma and violence.

What You'll Do

The Mental Health Clinician provides clinical assessment, individual and family counselling, health systems navigation and referrals, advocacy, and wellness case planning to The Inn's shelter families. The role also includes planning and co-facilitating mental health and/or addictions groups. The Mental Health Clinician works with The Inn's Health and Wellness team to triage and assess families' mental health needs and collaborates with other team members, including the Health and Wellness Specialist and shelter case managers, on developing the family case plan.

Assess family needs and provide supportive clinical counselling to families who present with mental health challenges, including substance use and addiction issues. Assess family individuals for risk to themselves or others and contribute to safety planning. Assist families with health system navigation, provide resources, and make referrals for mental health and addictions-related services as required. Facilitate community partnerships with agencies specializing in mental health services, addiction counselling, and/or treatment. Facilitate psycho-educational group sessions related to homelessness and trauma and its impact on mental health and addiction. Provide case consultation support to team members working with shelter families and contribute to family case planning goals and activities to support positive family outcomes. Opportunity to participate in the supervision of clinical practicum students.

This position description reflects the general duties of the role but is not intended to include all duties that may be inherent in the position. The Mental Health Clinician may be asked to perform other duties as required or assigned.

What You Bring to Our Mission

Master's degree in social work, or equivalency in a related field, and active registration/good standing with the Alberta College of Social Workers (or other professional discipline in Alberta). Current clinical professional liability insurance, as a clinician in your respective field. 3-5 years' experience as a clinician with additional experience in adult addiction services. Experience working with vulnerable families (adults, youth, children) impacted by poverty, trauma, and homelessness. Experience working with diverse cultural groups, including Indigenous and newcomer families. Experienced practice with trauma-informed care, harm reduction principles, solution-focused and client-centred approaches. Experience with mental health assessments, individual, family and group counselling, and case planning. Specialized training in evidence-based therapies to address client mental health and substance use needs (e.g. cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectal behaviour therapy, solution-focused therapy, etc.) Knowledge of evidence-based best practices in mental health services and addiction, substance use and family systems. Exceptional communication, advocacy, and rapport-building skills. Previous experience working in a shelter environment, and knowledge of a Housing First approach are strong assets. Valid First Aid/CPR (Level C) and Suicide Intervention certificates (6 months or less) are strong assets.
