Indigenous Relations Lead (Ontario)



NOTE:
This role is a remote working position, in the Sarnia region of Ontario.

The Indigenous Relations Lead (IRL) will be responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Use expertise for Indigenous community engagement internally and externally through outreach, building relationship and mentoring staff on cultural, traditional, and ceremonial practices.
  • Building authentic relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, businesses, and academia.
  • Support recruitment and readiness efforts by guiding teams on Indigenous engagement in these new areas.

Key Responsibilities

Business and Relationship Development

  • Work with WBF management team to capture and deliver on unique opportunities that benefit Indigenous communities and women through training, employment and mentorship.
  • Seek out new relationships with Indigenous communities by researching resources and identifying capacity and developing community engagement activities.
  • Develop deep and broad authentic relationships in urban and rural communities (including interprovincial); find ways to build trust and gain invitations i.e. as the champion of the long relationship cycle, become immersed in communities to then build partnerships.
  • Ensure that all engagement and training initiatives are being met and that funders are satisfied with those efforts; produce and/or contribute to reports in conjunction with funders as required.
  • Keep accurate and current account of community relations and engagement work using the WBF's online databases.
  • Collaborate with teams to stay up to date on projects updates and act as an IR representative for various committees (program/projects, H&S, engagement, etc.)
  • Mentor WBF staff & students with cultural support when needed.
  • Provide virtual, written, and verbal presentations as required.
  • Work as part of a team to plan and coordinate staff learning opportunities, including community engagements, classroom, and landbased learning.
  • Comply with all the Health and Safety management system requirements.
  • Comply with Code of Conduct and lead by example our values and guiding principles.

Indigenous Strategy

  • Participate in the development of the WBF Ontario Indigenous Relations and Inclusion Strategy to increase Indigenous awareness and inclusion across the organization.
  • Actively support WBF's engagement of Indigenous women in exploring, preparing for, and successfully entering Ontario's trades workforce.
  • Represent WBF at various events and networking opportunities that align with organizational objectives.
  • Advise and collaborate on foundational learning opportunities based on economic development.
  • Plan to travel frequently: out of the office meetings and overnight travel are likely to be required.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge and direct experience in engaging with Indigenous communities, including on Indigenous history and rights, on cultural protocols and norms, on Indigenous politics and the ability to successfully engage with Indigenous peoples.
  • Understands the barriers facing Indigenous women and historical and contemporary issues faced by urban Indigenous communities in Canada, including but not limited to, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action, UNDRIP, the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

Education & Experience

  • Indigenous engagement background with a minimum of 8+ years direct experience with Indigenous communities in Ontario.
  • Extensive crossfunctional track record working across departments to find creative solutions.
  • Experience working with Indigenous women; training, workshops, mentoring & supporting.
  • Relevant undergraduate and graduate degrees or diploma (Lived experience in an Indigenous community or communities would be considered an equivalent asset) Evidence of ongoing learning in related area
