**Working for the Department/Faculty
The University of Alberta is home to North America's only freestanding Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. We provide academic training in Rehabilitation Science, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology.

Our researchers lead their field in areas such as spinal cord injury, mental health, robotics, language development, and the impacts of COVID-19.

**Position

The laboratory technicians are the primary support for the PIs, Research Associates, and trainees requiring assistance with experimental work and laboratory maintenance.

The joint laboratories conduct neuroscience research related to motor control, neurotrauma, and related neurological disorders using rats and mice as animal models.

This includes surgeries, motor task training, behavioral testing, histology, microscopy, optogenetics, and electrophysiology.

The position requires an individual who enjoys working with animals but understand that these animals will ultimately be euthanized and tissues collected for evaluation.

Animal care and handling, management and maintenance of the animal facility and behavioral testing is an essential and demanding part of this job.

Other major responsibilities include, managing (or assisting to manage) mouse colony breeding and genotyping, processing of experimental tissue, including cryo-sectioning, immuno-staining and data analysis.

Additional duties include maintenance of stock solutions, maintenance of a clean and safe laboratory environment, as well as assisting with performing, developing, and improving techniques used in the lab as assigned by the PI.

**Duties

Animal facility management and animal care (35%):

  • Establish a new animal housing room and an animal training room for ongoing rehabilitative training experiments, including setting up new caging, arranging training devices for optimal data collection, creating and modifying standard operating procedures for users of the facility, ensuring other users of the facility are compliant with the established protocols, etc.
  • Perform daily animal checks and provide animal care according to CCAC guidelines.
  • Help maintain animal room(s) and cage changing schedules.
  • Provide accurate and detailed animal room record keeping.
  • Organize and manage existing mouse colony including breeder program to generate multimutant lines.
  • Responsible to order new cages, water, food, and other miscellaneous items from central animal care facilities.
  • Will be responsible for writing, updating, and maintaining animal use protocols in consultation with the PI.

Data collections and analysis (35%):

  • Perform daily training of animals in various behavioral tasks, including the single pellet reaching grasping and retrieval task, according to lab standard operating procedures (SOP).
  • Develop and test new behavioral training and testing tasks and devices in consultation with the PI.
  • Establish protocols for training animals using any training tasks or devices developed by the PI or other laboratory members.
  • Record videos of animals performing behavioral tasks.
  • Analyze videos of animals performing tasks to compare movements to a standard scale and a set of behavioral and sensory tests appropriate for that experiment.
  • Collect, organize, document, and summarize experimental data.
  • Provide accurate and detailed record keeping for research project
