We are looking for people across all our rich diversity to help keep the City of Edmonton clean as a Waste Collection Labourer.


What will you be doing?

  • This role includes heavy, manual work as they push/ pull garbage and food scraps carts to and from the collection vehicle and manually load recyclable materials, and Grass/ Leaf and Yard Waste
  • Provide guidance to the driver in backing up situations
  • Collectors identify surrounding/overhead hazards that will cause issues during the loading process, and ensure public safety is considered and communicated to the Waste Operator
  • Employees in this class do not drive or operate collection vehicles
  • Adhere to safety and environmental regulations and work procedures
  • Maintain a positive customer service attitude in the performance of all duties
  • Perform related duties as required
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary collection vehicle including cleaning hoppers/traps daily

Work Environment:

  • Working for extended periods in all weather conditions. Physically strenuous labor is required when maneuvering carts to pickup areas and return them to their original locations.

Qualifications:

  • Completed Grade 1 1 year of labourer experience required

Assets:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5Q license is an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid certification is an asset

Skills Required for Success:

  • Ability to perform heavy, strenuous and agility intensive labour for extended periods of time and under extreme weather conditions
  • Knowledge of appropriate material handling practices to avoid skin and eye contamination, cuts, slipping, and associated mishaps
  • Ability to deal with the public during pickup of refuse and to resolve complaints of a minor nature
  • Ability to work alone with little or no supervision, as well as the ability to work with a small team

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Passing a physical strength evaluation (Functional Ability Recruitment Evaluation test F.A.R.E.) and a preemployment City medical examination is a requirement of this position

Hours of Work: Various shifts, 40 hours per week. Overtime work may be required during peak operational periods

_ Successful applicants may be eligible for recall in the 2025 season_

_ Up to 20 temporary full-time positions for up to 10 months_
