Nova Scotia Legal Aid Commission - Staff Lawyer

Nova Scotia Legal Aid Commission (NSLAC) provides legal aid services throughout the Province, offering support to all Nova Scotians with a strong focus on helping vulnerable and historically disadvantaged individuals. The organization specializes in criminal, family, and social justice law. NSLAC operates in 24 offices and 3 sub-offices across the Province. Staff Lawyers play a crucial role in assisting numerous clients annually, with a significant amount of time spent in court. They are dedicated to breaking down historical barriers to access to justice and have successfully litigated important cases to defend individual rights.



Primary Functions:

  • Providing legal advice and representation in Supreme and Provincial Court
  • Offering legal opinions, filing documents, attending court sessions, engaging in mediation, and providing valuable advice to clients
  • Providing briefs on social justice matters to regional offices
  • Active involvement in community outreach and delivering legal education on social justice



Ideal Abilities and Skills:

  • Strong grasp of criminal law and social justice issues
  • Efficient management of a high caseload
  • Ability to work with clients with complex requirements, problem-solving creatively, and operating effectively both independently and in a team
  • Effective communication skills, with the capability to engage with diverse individuals
  • Skilled in negotiation, debate, and persuasion
  • Compliance with organizational policies and procedures
  • Advocacy experience in mental health matters
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Investigative skills, problem-solving abilities, and risk analysis expertise
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proficiency in using modern communication technologies
  • Proficiency in using legal research applications and common software packages
  • Possession of a valid driver's license



Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) Degree
  • Member in good standing of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society or equivalent
