Reports to:
Mine Lab Manager/Supervisor, Baffinland


The Mine Site Prep Technician is responsible for the preparation and analysis of client samples, while ensuring that timely and quality results are reported to the client.


General Accountability:


The Mine Site Team Lead is responsible for assisting the Lab Manager/Operations Supervisor with the day to day management of the lab in respect to quality, turnaround time, client service, productivity, safety and human resources as well as all Lab Technician duties.


Specific Responsibilities:

Supervision & Management:

  • Assist with the management and training of staff within the lab
  • Responsible for ensuring their team operates and conducts their work safely. Assists with addressing safety concerns, hazard reports, incident investigations and reporting.
  • Oversee and verify all analysis, layout and shipping;
  • Query a work list of samples, create work groups, data entry and data transfers to EVOLIMS and GEMS systems
  • Participate in the drafting and revision of quality procedures and work instructions;
  • Check and approve outgoing analytical data, ensuring QWI's and SOP's are followed;
  • Undertake or instruct staff to undertake the periodic calibration of specified equipment in the lab;
  • Ensure the cleanliness, housekeeping and presentation off all equipment and work areas;
  • Develop and foster a good work ethic amongst staff;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Arrange for staff coverage during illness, vacation or other approved/unapproved absences;
  • Required to be certified in First Aid and must pass Mine Site Safety testing.
  • Assist with QC investigations and CAR's.
  • Responsible for training new or temporary staff including onboarding/induction.

Sample Preparation:

  • Layout samples for analysis;
  • Data entry of sample information;
  • Use heavy machinery to ring, sieve, crush, and split geological samples;
  • Load and unload drying ovens;
  • Maintain production and analysis logs;

Laboratory Analysis:

  • Operate and perform analysis and maintenance on KATANAX fuser, XRF AXIOS, TGA and Manual LOI furnaces, LECO analyzer, pH meter, lab crusher/pulveriser, and other analytical instruments;
  • Identify & correct Quality Control related problems by ensuring the quality of the analytical data meets ALS standards;
  • Evaluate data using instrument software and GEMS and EVOLIMS;
  • Use Microsoft Excel and Word to create written reports;
  • Prepare sample dilutions, instrument operating solutions and calibration standards;
  • Test and evaluate calibration standards;
  • Ensure all prepared and available samples are accounted for in the lab;
  • Prioritize workloads according to daily stats and turnaround commitments;
  • Maintain and organize inventory of calibration standards, production logs and equipment records;
  • Perform water sample analyses and coordinate offsite shipment of samples;
  • Perform basic routine maintenance and repair on all sample preparation equipment, support equipment, and instrumentation;
  • Coordinate transfer of samples between mine lab and other ALS labs for analysis;
  • Responsible for final workorder approval;

General:

  • Conduct monthly balance checks and inventory control;
  • Handle basic internal problem solving;
  • Discard samples after analysis completed according to standard operating procedures;
  • Minimize wastage of chemicals and consumables in the laboratory and reducing breakdowns and downtime.
  • Optimize turnaround time for samples while ensuring the highest quality of results is achieved and maintained;
  • Coordinate the correct labelling and disposal of laboratory waste products per procedures, regulations or MSDS instructions;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent time management and planning skills, strong attention to detail;
  • Have excellent command of the English language, strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong customer service focus, interpersonal and organizational abilities;
  • Demonstrated judgement, creativity, integrity and ability to problem solve;
  • Excellent computer skills including MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint and Visio;
  • Ability to effectively handle escalations and time critical issues.
