1 temporary full-time position for 8 months, intended specifically for students currently enrolled in a computer science co-op or equivalent post-secondary work experience degree program, commencing in May 2024_**The Urban Systems Assessment section under Urban Planning and Economy's Department Strategy is looking for a computer science student who is motivated by a challenging and fast-paced work environment and enjoys working in a highly diverse team.


Our section, Urban Systems Assessment team, is responsible for complex data analytics, modelling and visualizations to support City's long-term plans and policies.

The section develops and maintains several analytics platforms and tools developed using machine learning and statistical procedures which require advanced techniques of data processing, database manipulation, and implementation of optimization algorithms using custom scripts.

These tools are primarily used to support strategic planning and operations related projects.

As a core part of the team, you will:

  • Use the latest technologies to develop visualization tools and dashboard to present complex analytical results in an understandable format, and later make it accessible to the public
  • Process huge amounts of spatial records (in the magnitude of Millions), retrieval, computation, manipulation, and analysis of spatial data
  • Streamline the transfer of information between the modelling system and the Visualization Dashboard
  • Develop customized tools to format largescale data in desirable formats
  • Develop customized queries to generate standard output tables and charts from largescale data
  • Standardize model output results to process in GIS software like ArcGIS or QGIS and automate model validation process

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment fulltime at a postsecondary institution, in a computer science work experience degree program

Assets

  • Experience with database (e.g. SQL) and statistical software (e.g. SAS, SPSS or R)
  • Experience with ArcGIS or similar GIS software
