Position Title

  • Communications Strategist, Applied Research
    Position Summary
  • Building on a 60year foundation of education, training, applied research and service to central Alberta, we are enhancing our institution's impact by embracing our polytechnic designation.
  • As Red Deer Polytechnic embarks on a journey to achieve the objectives of the institution's
    Strategic Plan 2030: Productivity and Social Impact, the Communications Strategist, with a focus on promoting applied research, will collaborate with research staff, faculty and students from across RDP, as well as industry partners, to create awareness and a positive image about RDP's applied research and ecosystems to ensure proactive strategic communication initiatives.
  • Through effective storytelling, the Communications Strategist, Applied Research, will help strengthen the Polytechnic's brand by sharing with a broad and diverse audience the incredible applied research (and its impact) that is being conducted at Red Deer Polytechnic.
    Position Responsibilities

Strategic Communications Planning

  • Develop and execute annual strategic Marketing & Communications Plan for applied research, including developing key messages, internal and external communications tactics, and evaluation metrics.
  • Develop positive relationships with internal and external business partners to share the exciting work that is taking place in applied research at RDP, while ensuring that the impact of this research is well communicated to internal and external audiences.
  • Determine the most effective communications tactics to distribute information to key audiences.
  • Coordinate photo and video shoots to support annual Applied Research Marketing & Communications Plan.
  • Create promotional materials, such as brochures, to promote Applied Research services, in collaboration with other members of the Marketing & Communications team.

External Communications

  • Work with Communications Manager to identify media relations strategy to share Applied Research stories with media (locally, provincially and nationally).
  • Pitch story ideas to relevant media to advance RDP's brand through applied research and respond to media inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Determine appropriate staff, faculty or student to act as a Polytechnic spokesperson for a variety of stories, collaborating with team members in Communications who oversee RDP media relations.
  • Write proactive applied research content for diverse communications tactics, with the ability to measure outcomes.
  • In collaboration with Communications Manager, create editorial calendar, coordinate and write content for key RDP publications, including the institution's impact report, annual magazine and quarterly enewsletters.
  • Support the larger RDP Marketing & Communications team with events and tradeshows, ensuring applied research is appropriately integrated (with printed materials, rollup banners or other tactics to help advance brand awareness of applied research at RDP).

Social Media

  • Collaborate with the Social Media team to create engaging content highlighting applied research, to be published on the Applied Research and institutional RDP social media channels.

Continuous Growth, Committee and Project Work

  • Actively participate in training and professional development opportunities to ensure relevant knowledge and expertise relating to website best practices, especially within the postsecondary sector.
  • Familiarize and provide input into appropriate RDP policies and guiding documents relevant to role, with ability to use policies and other documents in fulfilling role and in sharing information with colleagues across the institution.
  • Provide writing support to Marketing Strategists and Communications Strategists as required, for specific projects and vacation coverage, as required.
  • Support other Marketing & Communications team members in executing RDP events and special projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of postsecondary training, completion of a community college certificate in Communications, Public Relations, or Journalism
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Four (4) year undergraduate degree, or three (3) year undergraduate degree plus one full additional year of university in Communications, Public Relations, or Journalism
  • Accreditation in Public Relations (APR), and/or International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) is desired.
  • Demonstrated superior written and oral communication and editing skills.
