Position Title

  • Accessibility Technology Strategist
    Position Summary
  • The Accessibility Technology Strategist will provide assessment, training and support services in assistive technology and alternate format texts, with the aim of creating an accessible, equitable and supportive learning environment for students with disabilities in accordance with the Red Deer Polytechnic Policies, Alberta Human Rights legislation, and FOIPP.
  • The incumbent's major responsibilities are as follows:
  • Providing assistive technology assessment, training and support
  • Coordinating the ordering, distribution and billing of alternate format text
  • Researching, modifying and testing assistive technology
  • This position is part of a larger team of service providers in the Student Success division and the incumbent will work as a team member to provide excellent, proactive customer service in meeting the information needs of learners.
    Position Responsibilities

Provide assistive technology assessment, training and support

  • Assess the assistive technology requirements of students through information provided by Accessibility Coordinators
  • Identify student learning strengths and weaknesses and adapt available technologies to individual learning needs
  • Recommend appropriate technologies to Accessibility Coordinators and provide vendor information as required
  • Train students in the use of assistive technology utilizing course content and materials;
  • Provide demonstrations and training of assistive technology to staff and faculty who are involved in supporting students who use the technology
  • Coordinate and monitor assistive technology loan program
  • Liaise with Test Centre staff and faculty to facilitate the use of assistive technology in test taking
  • Provide support to trades students and faculty in the use of assistive technology related to the course content and delivery model used in the Apprenticeship program
  • Complete billing chits as required

Coordinate the ordering, distribution and billing of alternate format text (

AFT

)

  • Gather course text information to order AFT
  • Ensure student provides proof of purchase of required course texts in accordance with permission to license rules
  • Modify curriculum materials for eligible and referred students
  • Ensure AFT is accessible on all types of technology
  • Keep a library of AFT
  • Maintain a spreadsheet of all requested, received, and dispersed AFT

Research, modify and test assistive technology (AT)

  • Assist in the identification, modification and acquisition of AT
  • Demonstrate, research and test AT equipment on an ongoing basis
  • Provide recommendations on AT as required
  • Provide statistics as needed regarding the number of students trained in AT
  • Liaise with IT services to ensure assistive software works within RDP's IT infrastructure
  • Liaise with IT services and the Centre for Teaching and Learning to ensure assistive software works within Blackboard learning management system
  • Maintain AT equipment.

Continuous Growth and Acquisition of New Skills

  • Actively participates in training and professional development activities as they become available.
  • Seeks learning opportunities from other staff in the Division of Student Success to increase knowledge of Divisional services and can provide initial support and triage to students, faculty and staff.
  • Actively acquires knowledge and regularly familiarizes self with policy and procedure in order to meet user needs immediately without misleading or misdirecting students to services.

Required Qualifications

  • Four (4) year undergraduate degree, or three (3) year undergraduate degree plus one full additional year of University in a related program representing four years of study or equivalent. In what? Education (specialization in inclusive education), or Human Services (social work) or related field.
  • Experience working with individuals who have disabilities
  • Computer skills in Blackboard, MSOffice, and applicable programs
  • Knowledge of the various programs (hardware and software) available for persons with disability
  • Knowledge of accessibility features of various computer programs and operating systems
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated studentcentred approach to providing service
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
  • Demonstrated dependability and flexibility to meet student needs
  • Proven team player with excellent collaboration skills
  • Knowledge of Alberta and Canadian Human Rights legislation as it applies to individuals with disabilities
