Job Summary

Reporting to the Animal Care Supervisor, you will be responsible for field enforcement services to achieve regulatory compliance with City's Animal Protection and Services By-law, the Dog Owners Liability Act, and other relevant animal related legislation.

You will respond to a variety of calls relating to domestic, wildlife, farm, and exotic animals.

Respond to emergency situations and complaints from the public, internal departments and other agencies and proactively investigate, document and determine appropriate courses of action.

Required to prepare detailed briefs of evidence and complete necessary documentation required for court proceedings and testify to evidence in court.

Provide the public with education on enforcement, interpretation of by-laws, regulations and policies and procedures, including but not limited to, responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, and living with wildlife.


Note:
There is no set schedule for this position. Hours will be determined on a call-in basis up to 24 hours per week.


Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Promotes responsible pet ownership through the delivery of animal services programs to the public, including field and shelter staff.
  • Carries out field inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with animal services programs and as they relate to municipal, provincial, and federal legislation and advises the public of animal control legislation and bylaws.
  • Responds to public inquiries, investigates complaints and requests for service with issues relating to animal services programs. On call shifts required for afterhours response as necessary.
  • Enforces legislation through commencement of proceedings under the Provincial Offences Act.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records.
  • Attends court and gives evidence on behalf of the City with respect to animal service matters.
  • Provide humane and skilled capture, handling and restraint of wild and domestic animals including sick and injured in the community, including providing humane euthanasia at the direction of a certified individual.
  • Transports animals to the shelter and wildlife rehabilitation centre as necessary.
  • Utilizes computer systems and other technologies for documentation reporting and tracking.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Postsecondary education (certification or diploma) in Animal Care from a recognized institution or related discipline (i.e. Law Enforcement, Municipal Bylaw and/or Criminology)
  • At least 13 years of experience working directly with animals.
  • Municipal animal control or enforcement considered an asset.
  • Experience in the use of computerized records and data management systems (AMANDA an asset) and standard Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Submission and maintenance of a valid Ontario Class G Driver's License. As a condition of employment you will be required to provide and maintain a satisfactory driver's abstract (no demerit points plus no more than 2 infractions maximum of one moving and one nonmoving conviction.
  • Submission and maintenance of a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check (including the Criminal Record Check).
  • As a condition of employment, you are required to be willing and available to work outside of normal business hours on a regular basis including days, afternoon, weekends, statutory holidays and staggered hours.
