I. Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities


The position requires a competent and well-organized professional who values being part of a team while having a focus on supporting clients with a vision loss.

This position is responsible for completing a broad range of responsibilities and duties that will enhance the provision of Vision Loss Rehabilitation Vocational Rehabilitation and Transition Services.


The primary responsibilities include working in collaboration with the Employment Counselling and Transition team, Registrar and our ACVREP certified Rehabilitation Specialists in the areas of Independent Living Skills, Orientation and Mobility and Low Vision to support vocational rehabilitation activities or programs.

The role will also provide driving and guiding assistance for staff who are blind or partially sighted when required.

II. Essential Functions

This position entails, but is not limited to the following general responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Specialists, receives referrals and assists with the implementation of employment, transition and rehabilitation plans and program.
  • Under the direction of the registrar, supports vocational rehabilitation and transition services by providing access and engagement activities.
  • As part of a multidisciplinary team and in consultation with the specialist, provides support to enable the implementation, of the vocational rehabilitative service plans.
  • Demonstrates and reinforces adaptive skills for daily living skills in areas of personal management, household management, communication, basic indoor orientation & mobility skills utilizing vision enhancement tools, basic keyboarding and technology training.
  • Assists the specialist with the maintenance, coordination and inventory of adaptive devises as appropriate and under guidance demonstrates consumer products and low vision aids.
  • Assists with the production of alternative formatting of information for staff and client usage.
  • Capture information for the evaluation of client progress and for quality service improvement purposes.
  • Assists in monitoring of vocational rehabilitation, specialist and transition plans and reporting observations and progress to the specialist.
  • Maintains all case data and documentation consistent with VLRC Systems and Procedures as well as ContactNB and assists others are required.
  • Drives staff with a vision loss or clients as directed, providing support and orientation to their destination.
  • Collaborates with rehabilitation team in service delivery, coordinates travel schedules and facilitates program development.

Relationships

  • Close working relationship with all members of the rehabilitation team.
  • Provides support under guidance to individuals and their families readjustment to vision loss.
  • Attends and participates in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Promotes an understanding and awareness of vision loss issues through consultation, public education, and inservice training.
  • Exercises judgment and tact when working with clients and knowing when to elevate issues to the next level.
  • Understands and abides by VLRC privacy and security policy.
  • Exercises good judgment when determining if clients require a referral to another VLRC service or external services.
