Position Summary
The FireSmart Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination and implementation of the FireSmart program within the community.

This includes organizing community events, conducting home assessments, overseeing mitigation work, and educating community members on wildfire safety and prevention.


This is a term position with an end date of January 3rd, 2025, with the possibility of extension.

What you'll do

FireSmart Program

  • Reach out to community members to schedule home assessments.
  • Conduct detailed assessments of homes and surrounding areas using FireSmart guidelines.
  • Compile comprehensive reports documenting findings and recommendations.
  • Provide clear and actionable advice to occupants on wildfire risk mitigation.
  • Follow up with homeowners to ensure they understand the recommendations and offer further assistance if needed.
  • Organize and execute community events such as workshops, seminars, and demonstrations focused on FireSmart principles.
  • Partner with local organizations and schools to promote FireSmart initiatives.
  • Use social media and community boards to promote events and share educational content.
  • Build relationships with community leaders and stakeholders to enhance program reach and impact.
  • Conduct educational sessions for community members, explaining FireSmart principles and practices.
  • Provide oneonone consultations to address specific concerns or questions from community members about wildfire mitigation.
  • Plan and prioritize mitigation projects based on recommendations from home assessment reports.
  • Oversee the work plans and schedules for the mitigation crew.
  • Allocate resources and assign tasks to crew members.
  • Provide ongoing training to ensure the crew is knowledgeable about FireSmart principles and safety protocols.
  • Conduct regular safety briefings and ensure all crew members adhere to safety standards.

Other Duties

  • Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Manager, Director, Executive Director/Chief Administrative Officer, or Chief & Council.

What you bring

Qualifications

  • WSPP115 and S100 certificates are considered assets.
  • First Aid Level 1 and OHS certificates an asset.
  • FireSmart training is considered an asset.

Preferred

  • Lived experience as a member of an Indigenous community, or with knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island's culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
  • Experience working with First Nations communities, young workers, and adults.
  • Prior wildfire experience and construction/renovation experience an asset.
  • Ability and willingness to learn online and in person platforms.
  • Ability and willingness to navigate Fire Smart website and Fire Smart requirements.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).

Cultural Competency

  • Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, First Nations cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues affecting First Nations people.
  • Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.

Working / Special Conditions

  • Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and perform both fieldwork and office work.
  • Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for communitybased use, to effectively travel between facilities.
