Settlement Worker - Tagalog Speaking

Part-Time, Permanent Position


Collingwood Neighbourhood House's mandate is to promote the well-being of the Renfrew-Collingwood community by providing leadership and working collaboratively with individuals, families, agencies and other groups to develop and support inclusive, innovative, sustainable initiatives and services that respond to the community's social, educational, economic, health, cultural and recreational needs.


Job Overview

As a member of the Language and Settlement Community Services for Newcomers Program, the Settlement Worker is responsible for helping newcomers to settle in Canada.

In consultation with team members, including volunteers, the Settlement Worker provides support to individuals and families who will benefit from settlement services.

The Settlement Worker facilitates processes of integration for newcomers in their community.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides onsite, online and by telephone assessment: information and orientation services to newcomers
  • Give newcomers overview of Canadian society, systems, services and culture
  • Provides guided pathway approach for newcomers. Develop with clients a plan to address areas of higher needs and act as a coach and mentor, to guide clients to accomplish their settlement goals
  • Conducts needs assessment interviews to identify immigrants' needs and priorities
  • Provides newcomers with supportive encouragement that eases the adaptation process
  • Advocates on behalf of clients with institutions, employers, landlords and other organizations
  • Facilitates appropriate referrals and access to services and resources in the community, to support the process of integration into the Canadian society
  • Organizes and facilitates groups sessions
  • Provides practical employment services focusing on labour market skills and opportunities resume writing, interview skills, basic computer job search
  • Encourages newcomers to participate in the community by connecting them with various neighbourhood house services, community initiatives and volunteer opportunities that help connect new immigrants to their new communities and lead them to future employment and gain Canadian volunteer experience
  • Maintain IRCC-ICARE data entry on regular basis, narrative reports and stories for funding requirements
  • Be able to work remotely and inperson as required

Qualifications

  • Postsecondary education in Social Work, Social Science, Multicultural Work or related field
  • Familiarity with the Occupational Competencies for the profession of Settlement Workers an asset
  • Current knowledge of legislation and policies affecting refugees and immigrants
  • Knowledge of community resources and services
  • Interview, assessment, analytical and problemsolving skills
  • Demonstrated crosscultural communication skills and ability to work with volunteers
  • Commitment to antiracism and ethnocultural equity principles
  • Ability to work effectively with other service providers and community partners
  • High level of Computer skills
  • Excellent oral and written English and Tagalog language skills
  • Ability to understand and committed to antioppressive development practices and setting
  • Ability to work in an intercultural/Multicultural community environment
  • Attitudes and values in keeping with the goals and philosophies of Collingwood Neighbourhood House
  • Ability to work in person and remotely
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment

Job Details

  • Salary: $24.95/Hour to start with progression
  • Schedule: 21 hours per week during the time of 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Monday-Friday
  • Flexible
  • Start Date: As soon as possible
  • This position is covered by a Collective Agreement with CUPE Local 1936.
