Junior Activity Leader - Summer Programs and Camps (Temporary)

The Municipality of North Cowichan is seeking applications from candidates possessing the necessary skills, qualifications, and abilities for the role of Junior Activity Leader - Summer Programs and Camps on a casual basis during the months of June, July, and August, 2024. Candidates must be available to work daytime, evenings, and weekends based on the community programs and activities schedule.

The chosen candidate will be tasked with overseeing, instructing, and leading various youth-oriented summer camp programs and activities for the Municipality. Responsibilities include program delivery, leadership, and fostering community participation in activities. Occasional assignment to other tasks may be necessary.

This role directly reports to the Recreation Leader and the Recreation Programmer - Community Recreation.

The ideal candidate will:
  • Establish and nurture positive relationships with individuals, community groups, and the public;
  • Provide direct instruction and leadership for program offerings;
  • Maintain statistics, data, and prepare reports;
  • Ensure equipment and supplies for programs are well-maintained;
  • Oversee program operation and security during assigned shifts;
  • Implement rules and regulations when needed; and
  • Undertake additional tasks as required.
Occasional assignment to other duties may be necessary.

Required Skills, Qualifications, and Abilities:
  1. Completion of Grade 12. Candidates currently in Grade 12 or entering it may be considered.
  2. Prior experience working with youth in a recreational leadership capacity is preferred.
  3. Hold certifications in Standard First-Aid and CPR C;
  4. Additional certifications: BCRPA High-Five Quest 100 - Essential Child Development, Fundamental Movement Skills, Bronze Cross, and Swim Instructor, would be advantageous;
  5. Possess and maintain a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's License with a satisfactory driver's abstract;
  6. Familiarity with various equipment used in activities and programs;
  7. Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, instructors, the public, user groups, volunteers, organizations, and program participants;
  8. Capable of providing leadership and instruction for recreation programs;
  9. Strong verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills;
  10. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
  11. Physically fit for potentially demanding tasks associated with the role, supported by a medical certificate as necessary.

Candidates under consideration will undergo a comprehensive evaluation of their skills, qualifications, and abilities. Given the role's involvement with vulnerable individuals, the selected candidate will undergo a Vulnerable Sector screening check, along with a Police Information Check, if offered employment.
