Nature & Scope:


The Manager is responsible for leading YMCA BC Lower Mainland youth programs including proposal and budget development, people leadership, community engagement and program oversight.

The Youth Manager will ensure that all programs respond to the needs of youth in our communities, in particular members of the BIPOC community to ensure programming is equitable and inclusive for all.


Some of the current programs delivered include:


Alternative Suspension (AS), Youth Transitions Program (YTP), Youth Leadership Development (YLD), Youth Peace Network and various federally funded Youth Exchange and Support programs.

The Manager will be an important member of the local and national team delivering programs.

The Manager is responsible for overseeing multiple service sites and serves as representative to promote the programs to the various potential stakeholders in their communities.

The Manager also manages, coordinates and supports the program teams under their responsibility while ensuring effective, compliant program delivery which meets set goals and outcomes.


Additional youth programs aim to support young people ages 10-18 to develop leadership skills through team building, social events, volunteer opportunities, fundraising, training, and special events.

This position leads a team of full-time and part-time program staff and volunteers to provide high quality programs at several locations across the Lower Mainland.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and expertise to ensure the delivery of high quality programs and services that meet YMCA service expectations and the needs of program participants
  • Develop program curriculum and relevant staff/volunteer training that supports current best practices for working with youth ages 1018, in accordance with YMCA Standards, YMCA Child Protection policies and YMCA Healthy Adolescent Development principles
  • Provide direct leadership, training, coaching, and supervision to a team of fulltime and parttime staff and volunteers.
  • Ensures that all development and program service targets are met, with ongoing monitoring and evaluation of programs to ensure continuous improvement
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility by overseeing the programs annual operating budgets. This includes assessing variances, forecasting, reporting and making recommendations to address current and future expenditures
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with key stakeholders including program participants, parents, YMCA staff, volunteers, partners, community agencies and service providers
  • Work with team to adapt programming to support the changing needs of the participants and other stakeholders
  • Oversee development of marketing, promotions and outreach plan to recruit target numbers of participants
  • Working with a range of stakeholders to develop, set up and launch programming in new communities
  • Participate in full cycle HR process with employees and volunteers as necessary, including: recruitment, orientation, development, and discipline
  • Seek out and develop proposals and partnerships that lead to funding opportunities and pursue grants
  • Plans, participates in and supports Associationwide initiatives and fundraising events.
  • Ensure the YMCA's reputation as charity of choice is understood and supported by the community
  • Will be required, as needed, to provide direct care support and/or direct delivery of programs

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Minimum five years experience working with diverse groups of youth
  • Minimum three years experience in a supervisory/management capacity
  • Degree or diploma in Child & Youth Care or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and nonvisible dimensions of diversity
  • Mental Health First Aid, understanding of addiction, harm reduction, systemic poverty, traumainformed practice, child protection
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of staff and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop programs, staff, and processes to ensure operations run smoothly
  • Excellent administration skills and experience tracking expenses
  • Microsoft Office skills including PowerPoint, Excel, Word etc.
