Toronto, Ontario, Canada Markel Corporation Full time

This role will be accountable to the VP, Underwriting and Oversight and will work closely with the Lead Pricing Expert, National Markets, sharing best practices and making sure that Markel Canada's technical pricing standards align with wider National Markets priorities.


Other responsibilities will include assisting with portfolio management, developing local data & analytics capability, individual risk pricing where necessary, and providing input into the quarterly reseving process where appropriate.


Job Description:

Pricing (Main responsibility)

  • Maintain existing pricing tools, including debugging, managing underwriter feedback and change requests (compiling, assessing, implementing, communicating)
  • Build new pricing tools to the specification of Markel Canada product line leaders and adhere to actuarial best practice, including creating technical documentation on assumptions, user guides.
  • Assist in the pricing of specific risks according to Markel underwriting guidelines, and support underwriting strategy across Markel Canada
  • Review rates, assumption, and pricing manuals. Provide impact analysis on same on selected product lines as requested by underwriters and management
  • Research and propose new pricing techniques and methodologies, continuously seeking to improve the quality of pricing data
  • Work with underwriters on new product development, actively build relationships with underwriters and active curiosity to independently seek areas where the data led analysis can add value
  • Conduct peer review of actuarial work.
Data & Analytics

  • Assess and improve the data quality produced by the local offices for use by central functions
  • Research and implement solutions to improve the data & analytics capabilities in Markel Canada
  • Remain current with the latest techniques applicable to our business
Profitability | Portfolio Analysis

  • Develop portfolio management tools (e.g., dashboards | data visualisations) and key metrics to enable data driven decision making and support the Underwriting Leadership team's product portfolio reviews
  • Provide analysis for management to assist them in formulating their strategy on specific lines of business.
  • Assist with the creation of regular reports on key pricing metrics, e.g., rate adequacy and rate change. Liaise with underwriters and report on any trends or observations.
Technical Skills/Knowledge/Experience

  • Hold a bachelor's degree in actuarial science, Mathematics or equivalent.
  • Be actively pursuing Actuarial exams (CAS preferred), minimum of 2 exams
  • Have at least 2 years of working experience (including coop experience) in insurance industry knowledge of commercial insurance products is an asset.
  • Possess advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel & VBA
  • Be experienced in programming languages including SQL, R and Python
  • Use problem solving, collaboration, emotional intelligence, and logical reasoning skills in decision making.
  • Successfully articulate thoughts and express ideas using oral, written, and nonverbal communication skills to interact well both within the team and with underwriters and other collaborators
  • Be effective and engaging when communicating technical concepts to nontechnical audiences
  • Be a continuous learner that actively looks for ways to expand knowledge to gain new skills and expertise.
