Are you fascinated by the shifting media landscape? Do you keep up with emerging technologies? Get set for an all-new approach to regional media coverage founded on mobility, interactivity, proximity and innovation - the concept will allow residents to stay well informed, as well as discuss and react to events affecting their daily lives, all via the public broadcaster.


  • Reporting to the Digital Senior Producer, you have exceptional skills in writing, editing and, packaging for social media. You know how to work the algorithms to your advantage and can make stories go viral.
  • You oversee the production of digital news content by writing social media headlines and stories. You select photos, craft photo galleries and publish video for social on a continuing and ongoing basis.
  • The social editor / presenter demonstrates and maintains a high degree of organizational skills coupled with the focus and work on a quick turnaround basis. You determine the right format for the content. You follow through and work in close cooperation with newsgathering and the program unit.

Key tasks:

  • Ensures the treatment of online social content adheres to the daily priorities established by the local station and network.
  • Ensures the station's social accounts are programmed in a way that takes advantage of the algorithms and reflects audience's needs by time of day, and day of week.
  • Ensures the station's social accounts adheres to the mobile, dayparting programming objectives and mission statements.
  • Responds to and engages with audience via social media. Includes live blogging and public moderation of live online social media exchanges. Injects personality into exchanges. Asks the audience questions, stirs the conversation, and reflects those conversations back to other platforms.
  • Curates and aggregates community reaction.
  • Writes, edits, packages and publishes digital content in a clear and concise manner.
  • Gathers and reports information from various sources. Rewrites material as necessary to make it more relevant for the social platforms.
  • Selects and crafts photos, and video and or audio clips to publish on social media.
  • Monitors news platforms for viral stories, memes or trends. Promotes these stories on CBC social platforms.
  • Uses social as a research tool for big, breaking or emerging stories in the local region. Helps craft social plans to promote and elevate local stars, (both CBC and nonCBC) on social media.
  • Solicits, coordinates and verifies local User Generated Content (UGC) on behalf of the newsroom. Performs real time curation of UGC.
  • Contributes and pitches ideas or program content; participates in the preparation of program objectives for both local and national social pages.
  • Programs social media for offhours.
  • Manages social accounts for the CBC News location.
  • Liaises with other staff to ensure required material is available.
  • Publishes CBC material on social media and other platforms.
  • Job requires a university degree or equivalent.
  • Job requires two to three years managing social media accounts for a major news brand or related experience.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Extensive general knowledge.
  • Excellent knowledge of current events.
  • Advice and guidance are available but initiative and independent judgment are expected.
  • Solid command of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat.
  • Solid command of communication skills specific to medium, as well as interview techniques, along with experience in digital environment.
  • Solid command of social media management systems like TweetDeck and Hootsuite.
  • Fluency in working language.
