Job Description Summary
The Facility Manager manages the Analytical Core Laboratory (ACL), which is a core facility within the Faculty of Land and Food Systems.
The Analytical Core Laboratory provides services to a large number of scientists in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, Michael Smith Laboratory, and other scientists at UBC, as well as other institutions and industry partners.
Organizational Status
The Facility Manager works independently and reports to the Associate Dean Research (ADR), who is the Chair of the Analytical Core Committee, on day-to-day activities that are ongoing within the ACL.
The manager works closely with the FNH/WRC Administrative Manager and with internal UBC faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, visitors and graduate students that have committed projects with the ACL.
This position liaises with external vendors and user groups.Work Performed
- Oversees the daytoday operation of the ACL including supervising postdoctoral fellows, visiting scientists, technical staff and graduate students on instrumentation, chromatography, mass spectrometry and technical theories and problems.
- Participates in multidisciplinary projects with research groups on and off campus, acting as liaison with external users, and with the understanding of the facility operation group.
- Directs analytical support on projects relevant to the Faculty's research needs, which include: identifying and quantifying single or complex mixtures of analytes, characterizing large arrays of metabolic profiles of multiple compounds in samples derived from grape berries, yeast and other fermentation processes, as well as food and feed components, forest trees and floral scents.
- Responsible for supporting ongoing and future largescale research projects with metabolite analysis.
- Serves as a key resource for headspace analyses of volatile compounds in foods, beverages, feeds, plants and related biological samples.
- Prepares monthly income and expenditure estimates for laboratory activity, responsible for budget management and inventory acquisition.
- Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, refurbishes, upgrades and operates analytical instruments (combined gas, liquid chromatographs and mass spectrometers).
- Establishes and administers policies, procedures and guidelines for users and service fees.
- Establishes method development and instrument training.
- Implements laboratory methods and protocols to support a fast delivery of quality and costeffective data to facility users.
- Contributes to the development of grant proposals, research reports, and journal manuscripts, particularly with regard to technical aspects, identification and development of method(s) required to perform studies, identification of equipment needs and specifications, and interpretation of research data (may lead to coauthorship).
- Promotes health and safety standards in the workplace.
- Advises other personnel on issues relating to technical problems.
- Keeps uptodate with the research technology and provides instruction on new procedures and equipment, including where appropriate, the identification, evaluation and introduction of new technologies that may be relevant to laboratory operations.
- Maintains records of all work performed and procedures used.
- Applies and maintains the certification of the laboratory.
- Performs other duties as required.
