Laboratory Analyst - XRF

Location:
ALS Geochemistry, North Vancouver

Reports to:
XRF Manager

About the Position:


As a Laboratory Analyst, your primary role will be to independently conduct routine and non-routine sample preparation and analysis of geological samples.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Perform duties in accordance with SOP and quality control procedures;
  • Prioritize XRF tasks according to rush, reweigh and lab aging from Webview and generate worksheets
  • Look for and retrieve sample boxes from Warehouse;
  • Calibrate analytical balances on daily basis;
  • Weigh client samples for drying and weigh dried samples with flux for fusion using Blueweigh;
  • Operate fluxer equipment for routine and nonroutine fusion sample preparation;
  • Ability to change liquid oxygen and P10 gas cylinders;
  • Prepare platinum crucible leaching solution, ammonium iodide solution and PVA binder solution for pressed pellets;
  • Weigh client samples for pressed pellet preparation and palatize samples using press equipment;
  • Weigh client samples and load/unload samples into electric furnace for LOI analysis;
  • Wash and set up ceramic crucible trays for LOI analysis;
  • Identify and correct QC problems related to Xray sample preparation by ensuring the quality of the analytical data meets ALS quality standards;
  • Generate instrument run for instrument loading and unloading of samples, according to method code;
  • Evaluate and approve LOI, pressed pellet and whole rock data in Webview;
  • Ability to train Laboratory Assistants and/or help staff from other departments on XRF routine sample preparation tasks;
  • Use Microsoft Excel and Word to create documents;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Safety duties: can independently take care of routine safety duties as assigned by Manager;
  • Takes care of weekly department inventory tracking
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong analytical and mechanical skills;
  • Excellent hand eye coordination;
  • Detail oriented individual with a strong commitment to quality;
  • Organized and highly motivated individual;
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team;
  • Ability to effectively handle a high volume of work and time critical issues;
  • Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal);
  • Strong MS Office skills, specifically MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
Required Qualifications

  • Recognized Diploma or Degree in Science required, with a concentration in Chemistry or Chemical Sciences preferred;
  • Minimum of 1 years analytical laboratory, instrumentation or related field experience required;
  • Xray laboratory experience preferred.
Physical Demands

  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for a full shift;
  • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.
