Position Summary:


The primary purpose of this position is to perform standard and routine cleaning services for campus buildings (Main Campus and College Avenue Campus) and to supervise a team of Custodial Caretakers.


  • Nature of Work:_


Reporting to the Area Supervisor and/or Manager, Custodial Services, this position is responsible for performing a variety of routine caretaking and minor maintenance duties within an assigned area.

The work requires a high level of physical dexterity and physical demand.

Supervision responsibilities include coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating the work of an assigned custodial group that attends to the caretaking needs of specific buildings, including building access and set-up for events.

In addition, this role assumes responsibility for the safe working environment of the Custodial Caretakers.

Reports to the Area Supervisor and/or Manager, Custodial Services. This position will be required to work independently.

Train, supervise, and mentor a team of Custodial Caretakers.

  • Primary Tasks:_
  • Performs all caretaking duties, including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors, cleaning restrooms and restocking paper and soap, emptying trash receptacles and bagging trash for disposal, changing light bulbs, locking doors after cleaning, and ensuring the proper usage and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Plans and coordinates daily tasks and priorities for a group of Custodial Caretakers.
  • Acts as primary contact person in each of their areas/buildings for any and all cleaning needs. Responds to and addresses any work orders assigned to them. Submits work orders for all other maintenance requests brought to their attention.
  • Works with the Area Supervisor and Healthy Workplace Advisor in the planning and monitoring of Custodial Caretakers' returntowork plans.
  • Provides input into the evaluation of a group of Custodial Caretakers during probationary periods, assessment periods, and annual performance reviews. Documents and maintains performance related logs on all staff members.
  • Trains, coaches, and supports staff in the provision of services, including the safe and proper use of all custodial equipment.
  • Provides first level problem solving within assigned custodial group.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and safekeeping of equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of cleaning equipment and supplies for their assigned areas; participates in the testing and evaluation of new equipment and supplies.
  • Completes and ensures the accuracy of timecards on a biweekly basis. Manages and approves all timeoff requests for supervised staff.
  • Maintains buildingspecific records on equipment, supplies, maintenance activities, etc.
  • Ensures proper setup for events, including but not limited to conferences, presentations, licensed functions and renovations, etc.
  • Makes recommendations for changes or improvements in current practices and procedures.
  • Performs regular inspections to ensure consistency and quality of work, as well as adherence to departmental and University policies and procedures.
  • Participates in ongoing training and personal development opportunities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 supplemented by a minimum of three years' previous related work experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of databases with a preference for FAMIS, Banner, and CASPUR or equivalent database experience.
  • Knowledge of materials and supplies used in the cleaning industry.
  • Knowledge and certified as required in the operation of manual and powered mobile custodial equipment.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to identify and analyze problems, formulate solutions, and implement decisions.
  • Ability to train and supervise employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, the general public, external consultants, contractors, and vendors.
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
