Job Summary


The Emerging Media Mentor provides mentorship to EML's team members on ideation, planning, development, and execution of emerging media technology projects.

The Emerging Media Mentor leads the development and implementation of programs and services to support academic innovation using emerging media.


The Emerging Media Mentor supports EML team members including faculty, staff, and students in the design and development of emerging media tools and techniques including but not limited to virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), brain-computer interface (BCI) and artificial intelligence (AI).

This position requires advanced knowledge of emerging technologies as well as extensive experience in ideation, rapid prototyping, and agile project management.

Organizational Status

EML is an experimental space where faculty, students, and staff from all disciplines collaborate with industry and community.

Its mission is to evolve learning by creating tools and techniques using emerging media including Augmented, Mixed, and Virtual Reality.

The position will work in collaboration with the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology, and other departments across campus. The position requires extensive contact with researchers, course instructors, students, and staff.

Work Performed

Provides mentorship to EML team members on:

  • Ideation, design, and development of emerging technologies.-
  • Research and evaluation of new technologies
  • Software development lifecycle
  • Programming/development methodologies and best practices
  • Maintaining security across technologies and services supporting emerging media
  • Agile project management
  • User experience design and evaluation related to emerging media and technologies
  • Collaborates with faculty, students, and staff to contribute expertise to EML projects, in a range of disciplines.
  • Leads training sessions and workshops, and creates and shares learning materials and guides for users, to facilitate the creation of a variety of emerging media including VR, AR, XR, etc.
  • Leads the identification and deployment of emerging media and technologies.
  • Provides consultation, support, and mentorship ng to users on new tools, techniques, and methods.
  • Provides support in the design, development, and implementation of programming and services within the Emerging Media Lab.
  • Responsible for writing and maintaining documentation in accordance with prescribed standards.
  • Works with the EML team in the development of policy and procedures related to the Emerging Media Lab.
  • Provides input to the establishment of policies and procedures pertaining the Emerging Media Lab.
  • Provides training and expert liaison for UBC faculty members across Faculties and Schools.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships and collaborates with others to achieve academic objectives.
  • Maintains appropriate professional designations and up-to-date knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools and provides input to strategies for ongoing support and upgrade of these systems.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement

The primary focus of this unit is to provide an experimental and exploration space for faculty, staff, students. This position coordinates the delivery of services at EML and the promotion of the lab.

Errors in judgment, poor planning, or failure to act decisively could have a detrimental effect on the delivery and use of EML resources by its users.

An inappropriate judgment could potentially damage the reputation of EML, and could possibly have a negative impact on future partnerships.

Supervision Received

Works under the general direction of the executive producer, UBC Studios/EML. Must be able to work independently and carry out work to completion.
