APPLIED RESEARCH BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

RESEARCH AND ACADEMIC INNOVATION


We're seeking someone with initiative and natural relationship building skills to identify and meet with prospective clients to determine the scope and scale of research projects in various industries and business sectors.

While ensuring quality, you will also explore opportunities to sustain existing corporate relationships by providing consultative services, delivering on projects or by referring them to other areas of the college so their needs can be met.

These roles will primarily involve working with researchers and students at NorQuest and other internal/external stakeholders to (1) increase the ability of NorQuest researchers to secure national and international funding by developing competitive funding proposals, with a special focus on projects involving research partnerships with industry or government entities, (2) identify interdisciplinary research synergies, appropriate funding opportunities to advance research initiatives, and strategic potential external partners, and (3) assist NorQuesters with establishing and maintaining productive internal and external research partnerships.


Your keen eye for detail and financial acumen will be put to good use as you prepare research proposals, budgets, and contracts for the Research and Academic Innovation division of the college.


HOW YOU'LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

  • Plan, develop, manage, and provide authoritative information on research funding opportunities, particularly those pertaining to research partnerships.
  • Regularly meet with employers, community organizations, industry partners, and members of government to expose them to NorQuest's research services and supports.
  • Respond to requests for research consultations and services that are often ambiguous. Services may be less than a year in duration or multiyear in nature.
  • Perform quality assurance with customers prior to, during, and after research events, activities, or projects.
  • Effectively use NorQuest's customer relationship management software to plan, track, and close training activities with corporate customers.
  • Work with the Vice Dean of Research, Manager of Applied Research, and other leaders at the college to identify new and prospective research clients, as well as propose new research opportunities.
  • Synthesize information received from prospective clients, contributors, and existing published research literature and create solutionbased research funding proposals.
  • Work with NorQuest's researchers, faculty, and staff to understand research topics in order to develop proposals that provide clear explanations of research activities and services to clients.
  • Work with NorQuest researchers and leadership to develop research opportunities for NorQuest students.
  • Prepare budgets for intermediate and complex research projects valued up to $1,000,000.
  • Prepare all documents for input into the Research Office's and funding organizations' electronic and hard copy records management systems.
  • Record progress with both prospective clients, and those clients with whom the department is delivering services using the college's relationship management system.
  • Identify opportunities to improve Research Office processes that provide value to NorQuest and its partners.
  • Perform "Just Do It" tasks as required to activities that require simple improvements.
  • Attend events or meetings to help grow knowledge of how one can affect NorQuest's impact on our community.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Post Graduate degree or equivalent professional designation in a related field (i.e. Humanities, Engineering, Sciences, Social Sciences, etc.). PhD is an asset.
  • 5+ years of relevant research experience in a related field.
  • Strong understanding of proposal development practices that increase funding viability. This includes familiarity with common funding sources including the Tri-Agency (i.e. SSHRC, CIHR, NSERC), ESDC, the GOA, and Procurement sites.
  • Experience in liaising with funding agencies and gathering program requirements.
  • Experience developing proposals with external partners.
  • Experience with budgeting and financial reporting.
  • Experience using relationship management systems.
  • Experience with communitybased research approaches.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities is considered an asset.
