The Operational Risk Management team is a strategic business partner supporting Canadian Operations leadership in meeting our Client For Life goals by providing comprehensive understanding of operational risk and contributing creative solutions to manage risk.


We partner with Canadian Operations leadership as well as second line of defence Risk and Compliance stakeholders to assess operational risks, enhance control frameworks, provide oversight on risk policy requirements and ultimately enable the business to change while maintaining risk within appetite.


The scope of the team is broad, as our internal clients include all Operations business areas supporting Group Benefits, Group Retirement Services, and Individual Insurance and Wealth.


As Manager, Operational Risk, you will manage a comprehensive portfolio of risk activities for Group Disability and other assigned Operations areas and will be a key point of contact for Operations leaders and second line of defence stakeholders to identify, assess and manage operational risks within the portfolio.


What will you do?

  • Assess risk and control effectiveness within the portfolio, identify and prioritize opportunities to improve risk management
  • Lead risk assessments to measure risk exposures, identify internal control weaknesses, improve the control environment and minimize the risk of loss events
  • Lead the rollout of new/changed risk and compliance requirements by identifying the impact to Operations and supporting business partners in the design and maintenance of programs to meet these requirements
  • Provide risk consulting expertise and lead risk reviews for key business projects, digital initiatives and process changes
  • Develop recommendations on effective control design and operational risk management best practices
  • Present operational risk findings and recommendations at monthly Risk Steering Committees with internal clients
  • Support reviews conducted by Internal Audit and Compliance as well as external auditors and regulators
  • Lead and/or coach Operational Risk Consultant(s) assigned to portfolio

What do you need to succeed?

  • Knowledge of risk management techniques including risk assessment, risk monitoring, control design and control effectiveness assessment
  • Portfolio/program management experience with strong organization skills and the ability to prioritize many competing demands
  • Strong partnership, networking, and influencing skills
  • Confident verbal and written communication skills, experience presenting sensitive matters to senior management
  • Ability to distill complex requirements without oversimplifying or missing critical components
  • Proactive and highly motivated individual who will take initiative and is able to manage unstructured activities
  • Excellent analytical, problem resolution and consensusbuilding skills
  • Experience in process mapping as well as identification and assessment of process risks and supporting controls

Assets:

  • Background in Group Disability or other Canadian Operations or related Business Unit functions
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in risk management or related functions (e.g. compliance, process improvement)
  • Certification in risk management and/or process improvement
  • People management experience
