Fish Safe NS (FSNS), located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is an industry-funded, member-based, not-for-profit safety association dedicated to providing health and safety education and awareness to the entire Nova Scotia Seafood Industry.

Our association currently consists of over 1,560 member companies which make up the fish harvesting, fish processing, aquaculture, and services incidental to fishing sectors.


Job Summary:

Fish Safe NS currently has an opening for a Safety Advisor - Commercial Fishing to join our crew.

This is an incredible opportunity to work with the Nova Scotia Seafood Industry, travel around the province, visit our beautiful coastal communities and improve the health and safety of those that work within the industry.

This position will work with our FSNS team in providing education, promotion, and advocacy of workplace safety in the fish harvesting sector of the Nova Scotia Seafood Industry.

This is a newly created part-time position with the potential of becoming full-time based on demand.

Hours will vary; however, it will be expected that this position work up to 40 hours per week in the Fall and Spring and up to 26 hours per week in the Summer and Winter.

This position is primarily Monday to Friday, however occasional work on weekends may be required.

The main priorities of this position are:

  • lead wharf-side and vessel-based health and safety activities i.e., safety dock talks, safety drills, etc.,
- observe best practices; identify potential risks; training requirements,
- assist in ensuring wharf-side training programs are specific to industry needs,
- oversee inventory and maintenance of Fish Safe NS's equipment including our Mobile Training Unit.


The focus of this position is to increase the overall health and safety culture within the Nova Scotia Seafood Industry.

This position will require activities to be conducted at wharves and aboard commercial fishing vessels in various locations within Nova Scotia, and on rare occasion, other Atlantic provinces.

This position reports to the Executive Director & when not traveling will work primarily out of our office at 127 Chain Lake Drive, Halifax.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with our members, individuals and groups engaged in fish harvesting,
  • Assist the Executive Director in planning activities & wharfside training schedules,
  • Assist vessel owners and captains with Transport Canada's Small Vessel Compliance Program (SVCP-F), review safety equipment and testing of safety equipment,
  • Promote the use and maintenance of Personal Floatation Devices,
  • Maintain records (participant numbers, location, vessel info, etc.) of wharf side and vesselbased activities,
  • At times, the Safety Advisor
  • Commercial Fishing will be expected to work with officials from various government departments,
  • Participate in the FSNS's health, safety, and wellness culture,

Regular travel in the province of Nova Scotia required, out of province travel may be required on occasion but rare,

  • Any other duties as required relevant to the association's mandate.

Lead role for the following:
- overseeing and conducting Safety Dock Talks, Safety Drills (man overboard, fire, flooding, abandon ship, medical) aboard fishing vessels province-wide,
- maintaining Fish Safe NS's safety equipment including inventory and maintenance (i.e., immersion Suits, Dacon Rescue Frame, Rescue Dummy, Personal Floatation Devices, Pubnico Ring, Life Rafts, etc.),
- health and safety awareness promotion inventory & maintenance (i.e., PFDs, Rescue Throw Bags, CPR Masks, First Aid Kits, Clothing, etc.),
- maintenance of Mobile Training Unit (inspection, service, maintenance, etc.),
- supervising Fish Safe Advisors during activities on vessels and wharves,
- implementing _Fish Safe NS
  • Vessel Safety Check_ program.

Required Abilities:

  • Conduct two person lifts when moving training equipment,
  • Lift lbs,
  • Climb fixed wharfbased ladders (various heights),
  • Board fishing vessels (of lengths 25ft to 240ft) via fixed ladder, gunwale, floating dock, stairs, or gangway,
  • Drive for long distances and be available for overnight work trips,
  • Excellent communication skills when speaking with various groups and individuals,
  • Computer literate (Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Word, etc.),
  • Meet the travel requirements of the job: 60% travel and in office 40% of the time.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • Has strong knowledge of commercial fishing vessels, or commercial vessels in general,
  • Has knowledge and understanding of the Nova Scotia Seafood Industry,
  • Experience working in the fishing industry, or in a marine environment,
  • Familiar with the occupational health and safety legislation that applies in the fishing industry i.e., Transport Canada; NS OHS Act & Regs; Federal OHS legislation is considered an asset,
