Commercial Underwriting provides a high level of expertise in the administration of HTC's commercial mortgage underwriting business. It is responsible for the origination and administration of new and existing loans and for ensuring the adherence of commercial credit policy, standards and guidelines, while fostering a culture of respect, trust and integrity.

Position Overview

The VP, Commercial Underwriting leads a group of underwriting and administrative professionals, ensuring adjudication of mortgage applications are in accordance with prudent lending practices and commercial lending principles. Assessing risk and ensuring all applications adhere to both quality and service standards remain the overarching focus for this role through coaching and mentoring their respective team. In addition to the above, the VP will have authorization limits consistent with their individual experience.

Position Responsibilities

Risk Management & Compliance, in adhering to applicable compliance obligations, including Privacy, Anti-Money Laundering/Anti-Terrorist Financing and internal Anti-Fraud Policy requirements, must remain the over-arching focus in carrying out one's responsibilities as outlined below:
Business Development (30%)

  • Develop the Company's commercial mortgage and loan portfolio within corporate objectives and guidelines
  • Maintain a network of desirable commercial mortgage clients
  • Attend business development meetings and functions as the company's senior commercial lending representative
  • Keeping current with commercial mortgage market trends and identifying business opportunities
  • Provide excellent customer service in the commercial mortgage lending sector
  • Oversee Company's commercial mortgage and loan portfolio within corporate objectives and guidelines
  • Liaise between the commercial mortgage division and the Company's senior executive on the daily management of the commercial portfolio

Portfolio Analysis and Reporting (20%)

  • Oversee the daily analysis of the composition, profitability and status of the commercial portfolio and its individual accounts
  • Oversee the reporting and presentation of the commercial portfolio to external and internal parties including minimum quarterly reports to the Board of Directors

Risk Management and Corporate Compliance (20%)

  • Establish, monitor and maintain proper risk management of the commercial portfolio, as part of senior management
  • Monitor and respond to changing risk patterns in the company's commercial lending lines of business
  • Ensure compliance of commercial lending with all regulatory, legal and corporate governance requirements

Staff Management and Efficiencies (10%)

  • Review of staff performance and staffing needs
  • Recommend staffing and structure changes to meet business requirements
  • Conduct annual and quarterly reviews of team members
  • Identify training needs and provide on-going mentoring of all team members as needed
Formal Education
  • Bachelor's degree required in Business or equivalent
  • Certification(s)/Designation(s) preferred in related area
Related Experience
  • 10+ years progressive experience in commercial real estate lending in similar financial institutions, including senior leadership within regulatory environment
  • In depth understanding of commercial mortgage products
  • Significant experience in adjudicating commercial mortgages
  • Proven track record of industry achievements
  • Demonstrated experience mitigating potential Risk and incorporating compliance activities within the Commercial Mortgage Lending portfolio
