Seaspan Ferries is looking for a Forklift Operator (Casual) to support operations during peak times and to cover vacation as required.


You must be comfortable to work in all weather environments and have strong understanding of health & safety working in a busy marine dock.

Experience loading/ handling and unloading bulk containers, cargo and operating various machinery related to dock operations.

Note:

Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at Seaspan Ferries Operations, 850 Jackson Road, Nanaimo, B.C.



What you'll do

  • Safe efficient machinery operation under direction of the Lead Forklift Operator.
  • This role requires precise forklift operation, communication and traffic coordination, and the ability to maintain an organized and tidy workplace. Understanding that working with a sense of urgency is required while maintaining the highest observation of safe practices.
  • The Trained Forklift Operator/Dockhand will be following the instruction of and working closely with the Lead Forklift Operator (LFO).
  • Provide the Administrative Assistant with accurate information to create Container Load Plans (CLP's) i.e. sample weights, lumber package identification, all other pertinent information to assist with preparation of timely documentation.
  • Perform general maintenance and safety checks of forklift, and barge ramp i.e greasing machinery, topping off fluid levels, reporting defects or necessary repairs to the (LFO).
  • Assist (LFO) with record keeping.
  • Maintenance and care of all tools and machinery.
  • Keeping all work areas clean and safe.
  • Follow instructions or requests given by the Administrative Assistant or (LFO).
  • Communicate and directly with Administrative Assistants, Lead Forklift Operators, the Dockhand /Yard Labourers on daily tasks and operations.
  • Instruct truck drivers operating within the facility and provide direction to CFIA inspectors.

What you'll bring

  • Completion of High School or Equivalent
  • Work experience preferably in the transportation industry.
  • 2 years of experience working around bulk cargo handling activities.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical maintenance.
  • Safe handling of lumber with forklift. This includes but is not limited to unloading/reloading Super-Btrain trailers, storage and placing of lumber, stacking lumber up to six lifts in height on land and on deck of barges.
  • Ability to load export containers and gather information necessary to complete documentation.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely around other forklifts and machinery.
  • Forklift Operators Certificate.
  • BC Driver's license.
  • Pleasure Vessel Operators Certificate.
  • Restricted VHF Operators Certificate.
  • Developed comprehensive knowledge and understanding of operating machinery over a barge ramp and on deck of barges.
  • Developed knowledge of procedures when securing barges, including winch operations and tensioning of lines.
  • Developed knowledge of barge loading procedures, stowage of cargo and trimming of barge.
  • Good understanding of hand signals and the ability give direction to other machinery operators.
