Research Assistant (Canada Summer Jobs)

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the National Policy Manager

PERIOD: Beginning the week of June 24, 2024 and ending August 29, 2024

SALARY: $19.55 per hour plus 4% vacation pay

ORGANIZATION: Climate Action Network – Réseau action climat (CAN-Rac) Canada builds social consensus for bold climate action by nurturing a diverse network of passionate organizations, pursuing many campaigns.

Canada's primary network of organizations working on climate change and energy issues, CAN-Rac is a coalition of nearly 150 organizations operating from coast to coast to coast. Our members include major Canadian environmental organizations, local volunteer-run organizations focused on regional issues, and organizations of all sizes and scopes in between. While Climate Action Network nodes exist all over the world, and work together globally, Canada's is unique in that it brings environmental NGOs together with trade unions – including some of the largest labour organizations representing fossil energy workers, Indigenous rights holders and national and regional Indigenous organizations, social justice, international development, health and youth organizations, faith groups and local, grassroots initiatives. For 33 years, CAN-Rac has been the only national organization with a mandate to promote the interests of the Canadian climate movement as a whole, rather than any one individual organization.

As a large, multifaceted network, we drive change by building relationships of trust through which we and our partners learn, unlearn and unleash creative, transformational, justice-based solutions to climate challenges. While the network strives for the same goals, our successes draw on the unique strengths, tactics and theories of change held by our diverse members and allies.

KEY TASKS:

The Research Assistant's duties will include:

  • Support the national policy team in conducting research on federal climate policies and developing policy recommendations
  • Support the analysis and inputting of data related to climate policy and campaigns
  • Support the development of succinct summaries and briefing materials based on CAN-Rac members' policy analysis
  • Support the generation of graphs and spreadsheets to portray results
  • Support the piloting of an internal document management system for research materials
  • Other tasks as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Languages – English required, French is an asset but not necessary.
  • This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program. As a result, applicants must meet the following criteria:a) Be between the ages of 15 and 30 (inclusive) at the start of employment;

    b) is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act [S.C. 2001, c. 27]

    c) have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant Ontario legislation and regulations. International students are not eligible.
  • Education/Experience – The ideal candidate will be near or post completion of a CÉGEP or university diploma, plus 1 year of related work, research or volunteer experience.

COMPENSATION AND WORKING CONDITIONS

RÉMUNÉRATION

Il s'agit d'un poste temporaire à temps partiel financé par le programme Emplois d'été Canada. Un taux horaire de 19,55 $, plus une indemnité de vacances de 4 %, sera versé deux fois par mois.

CAN-Rac travaille selon un horaire de quatre jours (du lundi au jeudi). Le/la titulaire du poste travaillera 7,5 heures par jour, pour un total de 30 heures par semaine.

Veuillez noter qu'une présence régulière au bureau de CAN-Rac à Ottawa sera requise, avec la possibilité d'un environnement de travail hybride.
