The Opportunity
The Water Operations Branch is a branch within the Infrastructure Department.

The branch's key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City's environmental infrastructure and systems including water supply, treatment, and distribution systems.

This includes the repair and maintenance of drinking water treatment systems, water mains, valves, hydrants, residential main shut off valves, repair and replacement and water meters for service billing; the inspection of water mains and services; the installation of Industrial / Commercial / Institutional water services and meters, new home meters and hydrant metered gate valves; the Backflow Prevention Program; the resolution of water quality or water pressure issues/complaints; the maintenance of City standard drawing details for water specifications; and the prevention of infrastructure damage through the locating services for all of the City of Barrie's buried infrastructure in accordance with "One Call" legislation.


Under the general guidance and direction of Supervisor of Water Customer Service, the Co-op Student position is responsible for supporting the Lead Hand of Water Customer Service, Water Quality & Distribution Operator Class II and Water Distribution Class ll Operators with maintaining the distribution system (flushing), assisting with water meter replacements, infrastructure locates and sampling duties.

Overall, this position plays an integral role in assisting the section perform maintenance activities within the City of Barrie.

The successful applicant to this position will perform and/or assist with the following tasks:

  • Performing data collection, sampling and reporting duties to ensure compliance.
  • Performing loop, dead end, transmission main and system hydrant flushing,
  • Assisting Water Distribution Class ll Operators with in home meter changes and service calls.
  • Performing flush box checks.
  • Programming of remote water meter reading devices.
  • Driving pick-up trucks and utility vans.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Currently enrolled in postsecondary school on a fulltime basis at an accredited institution (Coop program) targeted program is Environmental Technician / Technology
  • Standard First Aid Certification
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License in good standing
  • Valid OIT's in Water Distribution or Water Distribution & Supply.

Experience

  • Demonstrated field experience in an operations or construction environment.

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Demonstrated ability to exert physical effort to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects exceeding 10 kg regularly
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out the physical duties of the position which include climbing stairs and ladders, walking over rough terrain.
  • Basic computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Intermediate oral and written communication skills
  • General knowledge of sampling techniques
  • General knowledge of current environmental industry legislation, regulations and best practices including the following:
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated regulations
