The Opportunity


Reporting to the Senior Wastewater Optimization Engineer, the Wastewater Optimization Co-op Student is involved in various optimization studies, trials, and research initiatives at the Wastewater Treatment Facility.

This position will conduct technical research, non-routine sampling, data analysis and interpretation, testing and evaluation, and optimization of existing and new chemical and wastewater processing methods, products, equipment, and technologies.

The successful applicant to this position will perform and/or assist with the following tasks:

  • Assists the Senior Wastewater Optimization Engineer and the Wastewater Optimization Analyst with various research and investigations into new and existing wastewater and biosolids treatment technologies and equipment.
  • Conduct various field and laboratory analysis, including total ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorous, total suspended solids, pH, temperature, microscopic examination, jar testing, turbidity, ultraviolet transmittance, and dye tracer testing.
  • Maintain and calibrate various analytical field equipment and probes.
  • Accurately record and gather field and laboratory data, input into digital form, and perform various data analysis and interpretation of results.
  • Assist the Senior Wastewater Optimization Engineer and the Wastewater Optimization Analyst with planning and monitoring of pilot studies and experimental trials.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Currently enrolled in or is a student in a recognized College or University
  • Completed at least one (1) year of a related postsecondary education program at a recognized College or University
  • Enrolled in a a recognized College or University Coop program

Experience

  • Experience working in or knowledge of water/wastewater treatment facilities and associated theory.

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Demonstrated ability to exert physical effort to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects exceeding 10 kg regularly.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out the physical duties of the position which include climbing stairs and ladders, walking over rough terrain.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with contacts in a courteous and efficient manner, promoting a high standard of public relations at all time.
  • Willingness to work in and around disagreeable elements including chemical, mechanical, and biological hazards.
  • Advanced computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • General knowledge of wastewater treatment processes
  • General knowledge of laboratory and sampling techniques
  • General knowledge of current environmental industry legislation, regulations and best practices including the following:
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Environmental Protection Act
  • Lake Simcoe Protection Act
  • Ontario Water Resources Act
