With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments of Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, as a Municipal Enforcement Officer you will:

  • Generate compliance and cooperation by educating the public through explanation of bylaws, policies and procedures
  • Educate citizens and promote community stewardship for property standards, licensing bylaws and specialty enforcement initiatives
  • Respond to and process a high volume of complaints
  • Conduct investigations to verify and satisfy appropriate legislative and regulatory provisions
  • Assess the health, safety and quality of citizen life by conducting physical inspections on property conditions, people, places, activities or events
  • Collect and transport evidence
  • Determine appropriate enforcement actions: issue written or verbal warnings, violation or specified penalty tickets, clean up orders or weed notices
  • Prepare files and court briefs; provide evidence in court as required

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a recognized 2 year Diploma related to Police Studies, Security, Criminology, or a related diploma is required
  • A minimum 3 years of strong customer service experience is required
  • A minimum 2 years of diverse bylaw and/or law enforcement experience is required
  • Ability to pass internal training program which includes Officer Safety tactics
  • Knowledge of investigative techniques, bylaws, enforcement powers and authority, court proceedings, and rules of evidence
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, professionalism, and diplomacy in dealing with the public
  • Effective inperson conflict resolution and investigative skills; ability to deal effectively with sensitive issues on a continuous basis is required
  • Demonstrated understanding of racism and discrimination as it pertains to enforcement, and how bias can influence behaviour and decisions
  • Must be professional and respectful during confrontational and hostile situations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking, report writing, letter composition, stakeholder agency presentations, presentation preparation, and court presentations
  • Ability to manage a high volume workload, effectively organize, prioritize and reprioritize work
  • Valid current Standard First Aid, CPR and AED certificates are required
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent).
  • Use of personal vehicle required. Must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business

_ Up to 8 permanent full-time, up to 6 temporary full time positions for up to 11 months and 2 temporary full-time for up to 18 months in accordance with Article 18.02 of the Collective Agreement_

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, or 33.75 hours per week with the earned day off program, Monday - Friday, evenings and weekends as required

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time.

Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
