In the winter, you will act in the Leader I role.

The role of the Leader is to be a working foreman in charge of a crew engaged in performing many differing aspects of the snow and ice program.

The incumbent is responsible for the work performed by the members of the crew, ensuring compliance to all methods, and procedures concerning the task being performed.


In the EOII role during the summer months, you will be involved with skilled work which involves the operation and maintenance of forestry vehicles and equipment on the forestry planting team.

The work entails responsibility for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the forestry equipment and heavy-duty trucks.

This role will also operate equipment requiring a significant degree of skill and knowledge about Urban Forestry Best Management Practices.

The primary role will be operating the 5-ton dump trucks and a trailer to haul, load, and unload trees. To assist with mechanical weed control and stake removal.

Duties will include:

  • Direct and supervise staff daily in the field; participate with the Supervisor, in evaluating staff, as well as providing feedback and effective recommendations into the disciplinary process of subordinates
  • Provides employee verbal performance management
  • Coach and mentor field staff in a way that creates a culture for growth and development
  • Evaluate the current capabilities and productivity of individual crew members and identify training and development needs
  • Promote a safe work environment
  • Ensure all staff are trained on all of the tasks and equipment that they are asked to use to perform their work
  • Monitor the performance of staff, providing feedback as required
  • Set performance expectations and escalate to Supervisor
  • Conduct and attend regular staff meetings, ensuring safety and cultural commitments are addressed, as well as section, work and culture expectations
  • Daytoday crew leadership in a variety of related duties
  • Leads crew to various job sites in relation to predetermined schedules, assesses field conditions upon arrival, directs the setup of equipment and manpower, and initiates appropriate traffic control and related safety measures as required
  • Participates in equipment operations, laboring activities, etc, as required
  • Ensure appropriate and effective delivery of work, taking into consideration time, quality, cost/budget
  • Oversee the training, scheduling, and deployment of personnel to accomplish the work in compliance with OH&S Alberta and City Standards Operations procedures
  • Render professional advice, opinions, assistance, and services to the supervisor and LD2 as required
  • Operate the 5ton dump trucks and a trailer to haul, load, and unload trees. To assist with mechanical weed control and stake removal
  • Work with the supervisor, to define and carry out the work plan for the area/district
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 supplemented by supervisory experience/training
  • A minimum of 1 year experience in Snow and Ice Operations including operation of all vehicles and associated equipment is required
  • A minimum of 2 of 3 years of experience in Urban Forestry or Nursery Operations with experience operating large trucks and trailers (ideally 5 tons or larger)
  • Skid Steer/ Front end loader certificate, stump grinder training, tractor training
  • Good knowledge of the methods and practices used in servicing and maintaining equipment
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work of this position
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, and rules of the safe operation of the assigned equipment and occupational hazards applicable to the work
  • Ability to respond to inquiries/complaints in a manner that is conciliatory and sensitive to the needs of the public
  • WHMIS Training, Emergency First Aid Certificate, Chainsaw Training
  • Eligibility for a 12,300 kg City of Edmonton Driving Permit
  • Ability to complete task cards, work records and interpret work assignments
  • Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's license (or provincial equivalent) with Air Brake endorsement (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement for this position
