Position Summary:

Reporting to the Chair,School of Fashion, the Professor is responsible for developing, preparing, and delivering post-secondary courses.

Seneca offers courses in four delivery formats:
in-person, online, hybrid and flexible. Professors may teach in any one or more of the four delivery formats.


The Professor will be responsible for providing academic leadership in the classroom and within the School's programs, ensuring an effective and compelling learning environment for students.


Program Area/Level:

Responsible for teaching courses in the Fashion Art Advanced Diploma program.

Courses include but are not limited to:

Virtual Fashion Studio I & II, Pattern making (all levels), Sewing (all levels), CAD (all levels) and Sustainable Fashion Insight.


Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the senior academic officer of Seneca or designate, the Professor is responsible for:

Teaching:

  • Ensuring student awareness of course objectives, approach and evaluation techniques.
  • Incorporating active learning strategies in flexible, online, hybrid, and inperson classes.
  • Implementing appropriate educational technology and tools in flexible, online, hybrid and inperson classes.
  • Carrying out regularly scheduled instruction, which may include tutoring and academic counselling of students.
  • Providing a learning environment which makes effective use of available resources, work experience and field trips.
  • Evaluating student progress/achievement and assuming responsibility for the overall assessment of the student's work within assigned courses.

Course and Curriculum Development:

  • Ensuring an equitable and accessible learning community flexible, online, hybrid and inperson classes.
  • Designing formative and summative assessments (alternative and authentic) for online and inperson classes.
  • Consulting with program and course directors and other faculty members, advisory committees, accrediting agencies, potential employers and students.
  • Defining course objectives, and evaluating and validating these objectives.
  • Specifying or approving learning approaches, necessary resources, etc.
  • Developing individualized instruction and multimedia presentations where applicable.
  • Selecting or approving textbooks and learning materials.

Academic Leadership:

  • Providing guidance to Instructors relative to the Instructors' teaching assignments.
  • Participating in the work of curriculum and other consultative committees as requested.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Completed Bachelor Degree in Fashion Design/Art or a closely related field.

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years' teaching experience at the postsecondary level.
  • Minimum of five (5) years' industry experience in the field of fashion arts/design using technology including but not exclusive to Gerber and 3D.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technology used in the fashion industry similar to Gerber and 3D systems is considered an asset.

Skills

  • Demonstrated competencies in the following: sewing, pattern making, digital pattern making, grading, marker making, 3D fit and simulation using Gerber, digital technologies like but not exclusive to adobe creative suite, 3D design, social media, sustainable work practices (sustainability) and student mentoring.
  • An established network of industry professionals that can enhance the learning experience of students through joint projects.
  • Ability to convey the conceptual and practical aspects of the curriculum to students, while respecting their diverse backgrounds, experience and individual learning styles is necessary.
  • Demonstrated competencies to deliver inperson, flexible, online and hybrid teaching.
  • Ability to teach, engage, and supervise postsecondary students.
  • Must be able to work independently and with other faculty to develop and deliver curriculum and contribute positively to the team environment.
  • Excellent presentation, communication and human relation skills to interact effectively with the College's multicultural student and staff population and has an understanding of and commitment to equity and diversity in education.
  • Ability to contribute to opportunities to build interdisciplinary partnerships.
