JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Training Specialist - Control.

Reporting to the Senior Training Specialist, this position is responsible to prepare lesson material and deliver technical training in electrical/electronic/control and instrumentation subjects in a classroom, laboratory or plant/field setting, as well as supervisory accountabilities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Responsibilities are consistent with training and experience in utility-specific equipment and systems. In accordance with prescribed safety procedures and regulations performs composite electrical and control training activities:
  • Prepare and update technical training lessons and other related material and equipment for various subjects in electrical/electronics/control/instrumentation. Perform any necessary research.
  • Deliver training to trainees in classroom, laboratory or plant/field setting. Instruct personnel in proper use and application of tools, and equipment, computer terminal operation and methodologies.
  • Work with others to develop training aids to enhance presentations. Keep abreast of new developments in products, technologies and methods.
  • Participate in training evaluations. Maintain inventories of equipment, materials, procedures and other forms of documentation.
  • Responsibilities are consistent with the duties and responsibilities as set out in the OHSA under the duties of the "Supervisor" and the duties as outlined in the Collective Agreement under "Supervision".
  • Supervise activities of assigned staff, plan, organize and assign tasks giving adequate instruction, work procedures and provide necessary monitoring.
  • Carry out good housekeeping, emergency response and fire prevention practices.
  • Accountable for health, safety and well being of self and others in accordance with technical/operating procedures and standards, and includes the development of technical/operating solutions to problems.
  • Carry out all the duties of the job entitled Electrical & Control Technician

EDUCATION

  • High school diploma
  • 8,000 hours apprenticeship and/or two-year diploma in a related field (Instrumentation Technician / Technologist or Electrical Technician / Technologist)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 309A Construction & Maintenance Electrician Certificate of Qualification, 442A Industrial Electrician Certificate of Qualification, or 447A Instrumentation & Control Technician Certificate of Qualification is an asset
  • 2-5 years teaching experience is an asset
  • Knowledge with drawing, blueprints, sketches comfortable reading and understanding
  • Experience in preventative and corrective maintenance is an asset
  • Knowledge of hydroelectric power generation equipment is an asset
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to work alone or as a collaborative team player
  • Good judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Positive, professional and enthusiastic demeanor
  • Previous experience maintaining Hydro Electric Generators and associated equipment is considered as an asset
