Are you a strong team player with a love of molecular biology? The Molecular Pathology team in the Calgary zone has an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Scientist II primarily supporting the Molecular Pathology (formerly Molecular Hematology) laboratory at the Diagnostic and Scientific Centre.

The Molecular Pathology department, which includes Molecular Pathology labs at two locations (DSC and FMC) in the Calgary zone, provides complex molecular testing for a variety of inherited and acquired conditions as part of Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL).

These two labs will be moving to be co-located at the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre in the fall of 2024. This position will transition to the new site as part of that move.

The Laboratory Scientist II supports the South Sector Molecular Pathology program laboratories as part of a collaborative team comprised of management, pathologists, laboratory scientists (LS), medical laboratory technologists (MLT), laboratory assistants (LA), and administrative assistants.

This position provides leadership and oversight in the planning and coordination of research and development activities to introduce new testing methodologies/platforms in a clinically-oriented molecular pathology laboratory, as well as providing technical expertise in the troubleshooting of existing instrumentation and methodologies.

The Laboratory Scientist II provides advanced technical oversight to maintain compliance with accreditation standards and participates in the training and development of new and existing laboratory staff.

In addition, the Laboratory Scientist II communicates effectively of Molecular Pathology initiatives/issues to professional and non-professional staff and performs data analysis/interpretation using a wide array of molecular methods, analytical platforms, and bioinformatic software programs.


Description:


As a Laboratory Scientist II, you will be responsible for participation in the initiation of new approaches to testing, researching the viability of given projects, facilitating methodology development and conducting advanced or complex patient tests.

In addition, you will be involved in the implementation of new technologies and instrumentation and develop training procedures for new or revised programs, technology or instrumentation.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of a Master of Medical Laboratory Science degree or a related scientific discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a Molecular Pathology or Molecular Hematology laboratory. Bioinformatic and/or software analysis experience (NGS or otherwise). Experience with coding (eg. python, R). Experience with clinical lab information systems.
