Position Description:

***: Develops and implements programs, maintains systems, and provides institutional expert advice and professional and administrative expertise in Safety Administrative Programs, Incident investigation program, PPE program, Industrial Hygiene, Workplace Violence and JHSC Management. This position works closely with and supports the Director, Occupational Environmental Health & Safety in guiding the efforts of the Internal Responsibility System by working with departmental and clinical leaders to implement customized institutional health and safety programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops, administers and manages the following institutional programs for SJHH:
  • SJHH's 'safety administrative programs' including but not limited to JHSC program, Workplace Incident Investigation and Inspections (HIR program), Fire Safety, Safety Training Program, Safety Onboarding and Orientations etc
  • JHSC Program
- manage the JHSC program for all three SJHH campuses by providing technical expertise, facilitate resolution of JHSC recommendations, monitoring legislative compliance and supporting workplace inspections

  • Workplace Violence Prevention Program
  • Develop, implement and maintain an institutional workplace violence prevention program that includes developing and leading prevention workplace violence team, risk identification, safe operating procedures, training, and assessments
  • Industrial Hygiene lead the development and implementation of an industrial hygiene program. The program will include but not limited to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), noise control programs, designated substance programs, indoor air quality and assessments
  • Guides the efforts of the Integrated Responsibility System (IRS) by working with departmental and clinical leaders to implement
customized institutional health and safety programs to meet their needs and expectations- Reviews and determines the hazard spectrum and regulatory profile applicable to hospital activity and context

  • Interprets and applies pertinent occupational health and safety legislation, guidelines and codes. Ensures monitoring and conformance
to applicable technical standards, regulations and codes in a manner that supports the hospitals clinical and teaching mandates.- Evaluates the impact of new legislative requirements on the hospital to ensure the SJHH will be in compliance with these new legal

requirements.- Supports the Director, Occupational Health and Safety in the implementation of SJHH's OHS Management System

  • Researches and develops proposals and submits reports to the Director, Occupational Health and Safety as requested
  • Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or related field required
  • Master's Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering or other related field preferred
  • Professional certification e.g. CRSP, ROH, CIH required
  • Minimum of seven to ten years' experience in industrial hygiene, regulatory compliance, safety program development and implementation.
  • Healthcare experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to occasionally respond to emergencies after hours
  • Must be able to use standard office equipment, including a computer, calculator, audiovisual equipment, specialized industrial hygiene and exposure monitoring equipment, safety devices and personal protective equipment
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Google Mail/Docs)
  • Must have excellent consultative, interpersonal, communication, investigative, analytical, leadership, marketing and negotiating skills
  • Ability to prepare detailed reports, plan, organize work and work independently while also contributing as a member of the team
  • Ability to identify and evaluate occupational/environmental health & safety risk factors
  • Detailed knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Health Canada guidelines, Environmental legislation, pertinent acts and regulations, relevant University policies and procedures
