McCain Foods recently made a significant investment in Lethbridge, Alberta, marking the largest one-time investment in the company's 65-year history. The investment of $600 million CAD will lead to a major expansion, doubling the size of the facility and the workforce. This expansion involves the installation of two new cutting-edge production lines, one for French fries and another for potato specialty products.

Job Summary As part of the Corporate Engineering team for North America, you will play a crucial role in managing the development and execution of the new facility's construction by utilizing state-of-the-art technologies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Oversee the design and review of equipment and systems using corporate standards.
  • Collaborate with engineers to define project scope requirements and incorporate corporate standards.
  • Evaluate new process technologies to enhance existing systems and address process and safety issues.
  • Act as a safety advocate to ensure a secure work environment for both McCain employees and contractors.
  • Review and assess project contractor bids in coordination with procurement.
  • Prepare project specifications and/or tender documents.
  • Manage the release of design input to suppliers (contractors, component suppliers, etc.).
  • Conduct supplier site visits to ensure equipment designs align with current plant setups.
  • Produce reports from site visits, contractor job meeting minutes, project material listings, purchase orders, installation schedules, and other related documentation.
  • Assist in developing new installation techniques and standards.
  • Supervise the installation of state-of-the-art processing modules, ensuring they meet deadlines and budgets ranging from $100K to $10MM.
  • Review and accept deliverables at scheduled milestones.
  • Resolve technical issues identified by suppliers.
  • Manage technical documents provided by suppliers.
  • Offer technical assistance to processing facilities to enhance quality and efficiency.
  • Coordinate the commissioning of the installation to ensure a reliable and safe start-up.
  • Conclude the project in cooperation with the project team.

Supervisory Responsibilities This role does not involve direct reports. It requires interaction with others using project management and influential management skills. Supervision of third-party and company resources is on a functional basis.

Qualifications To excel in this role, an individual must effectively perform each essential duty. The qualifications below represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (ME/EE/IE/ChE) or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Preferably, up to five (5) years of experience directly related to food processing.
  • Familiarity with processing techniques.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining plant system documents, process flow sheets, block diagrams, schedules, and spend tracking.
  • Proficiency in using AutoCAD.

Language Skills Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Capable of writing reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Skilled in presenting information effectively and responding to inquiries from various stakeholders.

Mathematical Skills Skilled in working with mathematical concepts like probability and statistical inference. Capable of applying concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical scenarios.

Reasoning Ability Capable of solving practical problems and handling various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Competent in interpreting a range of instructions presented in written, oral, diagrammatic, or scheduled forms.

Computer Skills Proficient in word processing and spreadsheet applications. Skilled in using AutoCAD and Microsoft Project.

Physical Demands The physical demands include using hands for various tasks, speaking, standing, walking, reaching, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and sensory functions. Lifting and moving objects weighing up to 10 pounds may be required. Specific vision abilities such as close vision and distance vision are necessary.

Work Environment The work environment may involve exposure to wet/humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, high places, and electrical hazards. The noise levels can range from loud to moderate. Travel within North America is expected, with up to 50% travel if not based in Lethbridge.
