The Museum of Health Care at Kingston is Canada's premier resource devoted to bringing to life the story of health and health care.

As a history of medicine museum, the Museum of Health Care strives to connect visitors with the experiences of people in past times and provide context and perspective on today's health issues.

To help Canadians better understand this history, the Museum preserves and promotes the rich material legacy of our medical and healthcare past.


COVID-19 Protocols: As the Museum resides on KHSC grounds, KHSC policies, including full vaccination requirements and masking at all times while on the premises, are in place. The Museum maintains an extensive Health and Safety plan for in-office protocol, and all staff receive health & safety training as well as COVID-19 protocol training.

Collections Technician

SALARY:
$15.75/hr
START /

END DATES:
May 1- September 1

WORK HOURS:
7hrs per day, 5 days per week (35hrs/week). May 15 to 29, Monday to Friday. May 29 to September 1, Wednesday to Sunday.


The Collections Technician will work directly with the extensive collection of medical and health care objects and archival documents under the direction and supervision of the Collections Manager.


  • Catalogue and photograph selected donations
  • Rehouse archival items for new storage format
  • Review, assess, and inventory one collection and propose items to keep and to deaccession to the Curator
  • Keep accurate records through accession logs, donor files, cataloguing & inventory charts, and a daily activity log
  • Prepare objects for storage according to accepted museological, collections management, and conservation standards
  • Develop and film a YouTube video and / or research and write a blog post
  • Support other front of house staff as required, including pulling objects and door duty
  • Conduct collections storage rooms tours with a prepared script as required
  • Assist in the presentation of museum public programming that occurs during the work term
Required Qualifications

  • Inprogress College or university degree, preferably in history, museum studies, libraries and archives, or a related field.
  • Excellent English oral, written, and verbal communications skills are essential
  • Excellent critical thinking, communication, organizational, and customer service skills
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time at a computer
  • Ability to perform moderate physical activity, such as climbing ladders, lifting, kneeling, standing, or walking for periods of time
Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of collection management methodology and techniques, including research, evaluation, handling, sorting, storing and labelling cultural artifacts, documents and digital files, is an asset.
  • Experience working in a museum environment especially in collections management, cataloguing and or handling artifacts, is an asset
  • Experience using collections management database software InMagic, is an asset
  • Background or experience in one or more of the following areas: public administration, record and information management, museology, archival science, library science, history, health sciences will be considered an asset
  • Previous museum experience by yourself and not as a group effort: handling artifacts, taking and editing a minimum of 20 digital images of objects in a photo studio setup and conducting an inventory of large collections will be considered assets
  • Digital photography in a photo studio set up will be considered an asset
  • Enjoy working with lists of numbers, accuracy, creating order and analyzing results
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
  • Basic research skills using various sources, both paperbased and electronic
  • Monitor and maintain a safe work area
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
